3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Munster Technological University Bishopstown Campus

Program Overview

The BSc in Agriculture (MT750) at Munster Technological University is designed for students who want a strong blend of practical farming experience and modern agricultural science. It suits those interested in farming, agribusiness, and sustainable food production, especially if you want a career that combines science, business, and hands-on fieldwork.
Students develop practical and technical skills through farms, laboratories, and industry placements, preparing them for real roles in the agricultural sector.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In the first year, students build a solid foundation in agricultural science through subjects such as Crop Production, Soil Science, Human, Animal and Plant Biology, and Agribusiness Finance. Alongside this, they gain hands-on experience with farm machinery and livestock management while also developing key IT and mathematical skills used in agricultural decision-making.

Year 2
The second year focuses on strengthening technical and business knowledge in areas like animal production systems, crop management, and farm business planning. A key part of this year is a minimum 15-week work placement, where students gain real industry experience in Ireland or abroad and apply what they have learned in real agricultural settings.

Year 3
In the final year, students concentrate on advanced agricultural science, farm management strategies, and agribusiness decision-making. The focus is on preparing graduates for careers in farm management, advisory services, or progression into an Honours degree in Agriculture.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students on the BSc in Agriculture at Munster Technological University gain hands-on, practical experience from the very beginning by combining classroom learning with real farm-based training at Teagasc Clonakilty Agricultural College. This close link between academic study and working farm environments ensures students build real confidence in livestock management, crop production, and modern agricultural systems. Alongside this, students regularly use laboratories, engage in field-based learning, complete a major industry placement, and take part in applied projects that reflect real agricultural challenges.

The programme is designed to mirror the real agricultural world, giving students continuous exposure to both science and practice:

  • Practical farm training at Teagasc Clonakilty Agricultural College, including livestock handling, crop production, and day-to-day farm operations

  • Laboratory-based learning at MTU covering soil science, biology, and agricultural chemistry experiments

  • A structured 15-week industry placement in second year with agricultural businesses in Ireland or abroad, helping students gain real workplace experience

  • Field visits to farms, agri-businesses, and agricultural research and innovation sites, helping students understand industry standards and practices

  • Hands-on experience with agricultural machinery and equipment, including tractors, crop systems, and harvesting tools
