4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BSc (Honours) in Architecture at Munster Technological University, delivered jointly with University College Cork, is a dynamic, studio-led honours degree that blends design, technology, and the humanities to explore how we create meaningful and sustainable built environments. This course is ideal for creative, curious students who enjoy drawing, problem-solving, and innovation, and who want to understand how buildings and cities shape our lives and culture.
Curriculum Structure
First Year
In the first year, you will build a strong foundation in architectural thinking and practical skills through core modules such as Design Studio 1 & 2, Construction, Materials and Structures, Applied Technology Studio, and History and Theory of Architecture. You will learn to sketch, model, use digital representation tools, understand basic structural principles, and explore architectural history from classical to modern forms, giving you the essential toolkit for every aspiring architect.
Second Year
Year two deepens your design and technical understanding with modules like Design Studio 3 & 4, Environmental Design I, Applied Technology Studio, and History and Theory. You will start connecting architectural design with environmental considerations and materials technology, learning how buildings perform in real contexts and how design choices impact functionality, sustainability, and communities.
Third Year
In the third year, you will move into more specialised areas of practice with Design Studio 5 & 6, Conservation: Theory and Practice, Environmental Design II, and modules in landscape and historical studies. You will engage with preservation theory, landscape contexts, and complex design challenges, sharpening your critical thinking and preparing for professional architectural problem-solving.
Fourth Year
The final year focuses on advanced studio work and professional readiness through high-level design projects, research, and modules in Architectural Technology and Professional Practice and Management. This year integrates everything you have learned, culminating in a strong portfolio and practical understanding of what it takes to begin a career as an architect.
Focus Areas:
Design studio, construction technology, architectural theory and history, environmental and sustainable design, professional practice
Learning Outcomes:
Develop creative design solutions, technical competence in building systems, critical understanding of architectural history and context, effective communication skills, and professional readiness
Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
The programme follows the education policy of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) and the UNESCO/UIA Charter for Architectural Education. Graduates who complete a Master of Architecture, professional practice certificate, and two years’ work experience can register as professional architects in Ireland.

UCC and MTU are highly regarded for student satisfaction and graduate outcomes, and architecture graduates are respected by firms locally and internationally, often securing roles in design, urban planning, conservation, and technology-focused practices.
From day one, this architecture degree is designed around hands-on practice, real design work, and tools that let you turn your ideas into real outcomes. You’ll spend a lot of time in fully equipped design studios at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education, where sketching, model-making, and digital design are part of everyday project work. Alongside studio time, you’ll use advanced workshop spaces, including 3D laser cutting technology and dedicated IT facilities, to make both physical and digital models, explore materials, and bring your design concepts to life. Field trips and project visits help you connect classroom learning with real buildings and urban sites in Ireland and across Europe, and you’ll work both independently and in teams on design challenges that mirror professional architectural practice:
Studio-led projects and design reviews where you work on individual and group briefs in purpose-built studio spaces, receiving feedback from tutors and peers.
Workshops and digital fabrication facilities equipped with 3D laser cutters, model-making tools, and IT resources to develop physical and digital prototypes.
Field trips and site visits to local and international architectural projects, giving you first-hand experience of how architecture works in real contexts.
Photography, model-making, and representation tools to help you communicate your ideas visually and professionally.
Collaborative design reviews that help you refine ideas, build confidence, and prepare for teamwork in professional practice.
Graduates from this Architecture degree go on to build rewarding careers where creativity meets real-world design, from architectural design roles to positions in urban planning and conservation. You could find yourself working as an architectural assistant, urban designer, project coordinator, or conservation specialist — all built on the strong practical and conceptual foundation this programme provides:
University career support: MTU and UCC offer dedicated Careers Services to help you prepare for employment with CV workshops, interview coaching, and architecture-specific career events. They also connect you with employers and job listings relevant to architectural and built environment careers.
Graduate employment opportunities: Architecture graduates are sought after by professional practices, commercial organisations, government departments, and local authorities, with roles ranging from architectural assistant to project manager and urban design specialist. The programme’s focus on teamwork, communication, and digital skills gives you a broad skill set valued by employers.
Industry reputation and partnerships: Through the Cork Centre for Architectural Education, the programme maintains strong links with the architectural profession and follows the guidance of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland and the UNESCO/UIA Charter for Architectural Education, supporting your professional network and development.
Accreditation value: While the bachelor’s degree alone does not automatically qualify you as a professional architect, it forms the first essential step toward registration. Completing a Master of Architecture, professional practice certification, and two years’ work experience allows you to register as a professional architect, giving long-term value to your qualification.
Graduate outcomes: Alumni from the programme have worked with well-known architectural firms and have received recognition for their design work, showing the quality of education and creative thinking developed through the course.
Further Academic Progression:
After completing the BSc (Honours) in Architecture, many students continue their studies with the Master of Architecture offered at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education. This postgraduate degree, combined with professional experience and a certificate in architectural practice, is the pathway to registering as a professional architect in Ireland and opens doors to senior design roles, international practice, and specialist careers in conservation, sustainability, or urban planning.
