3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Technology at Munster Technological University equips you with the technical design skills and knowledge to become a key contributor in constructing the built environment, focusing on real-world application and collaborative teamwork. This studio-led, hands-on degree blends construction technology, environmental science, and design principles to set you up for a dynamic career in the architectural and construction sectors.
Curriculum Structure
First Year
In your first year, you’ll dive into the fundamentals of architectural technology with a strong emphasis on technical design projects in the studio. You’ll explore core areas like construction technology, materials and structure, and environmental science, while developing essential skills including teamwork, communication, drawing, and computer graphics. These hands-on projects form the foundation of your architectural thinking.
Second Year
In the second year, your studies build on the first by exploring more complex construction systems, building services, and technical detailing. You’ll engage with modules such as Materials Performance and Specification, Building Regulations, and Structural Principles. Digital skills in CAD and BIM are refined, and intermediate design projects help you coordinate systems and communicate architectural solutions effectively.
Third Year
Your third year brings learning into professional practice with a work placement in an industry setting where you can apply theoretical knowledge to real projects, guided by mentors from MTU and the workplace. Advanced studio and professional practice modules, including construction technology integration, environmental building systems, and professional documentation, prepare you for teamwork and technical coordination in real design environments.
Focus areas
Technical design, construction technology, environmental science, digital drawing and BIM, professional practice, and industry placement experience.
Learning outcomes
Graduates will be able to apply technical design principles, coordinate multidisciplinary building information, communicate complex construction details, and integrate theory with practical work placement experience for professional success.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
This degree is accredited by the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI), ensuring your qualification meets industry standards valued by employers and supports professional practice pathways.
Reputation (employability rankings)
While MTU’s specific program rankings aren’t published like QS or Guardian, architectural technology graduates from MTU are known for strong employability through studio-based education and industry placements that foster workplace readiness and professional skill development.
At MTU, studying Architectural Technology is about learning by doing from the very start. Most of your learning takes place in studio environments, where you work on real technical design projects, create drawings and models, and collaborate with your peers, just like professionals in the field. In your third year, a formal work placement of at least five weeks allows you to take what you’ve learned in class into a real industry setting, gaining valuable experience and confidence before graduation. You’ll also have access to excellent facilities on the Bishopstown Campus, including dedicated Architecture Factory studios that support design projects and technical work within a creative, hands-on environment.
During your time on the program, you will:
Work in the Architecture Factory studios, a purpose-built creative learning space designed specifically for architectural and built environment projects.
Complete technical design projects that combine lecture knowledge with studio practice, developing teamwork skills and industry-standard drawing and digital capabilities.
Participate in a minimum five-week industry placement in your third year, giving you firsthand exposure to professional workflows, client projects, and workplace expectations.
Use digital tools and software as part of your project work, preparing you for modern architectural practice, including CAD-based visualization and digital design communication.
Benefit from the wider Bishopstown Campus facilities, including the university library, computer suites, and collaborative study spaces that support group work and research throughout your degree.
Graduates of the BSc in Architectural Technology leave MTU ready to step directly into professional roles where they contribute to building design, technical coordination, and construction management. You’ll find opportunities in both private and public sectors, with typical roles including Architectural Technologist, BIM Coordinator, Construction Project Technician, or Building Inspector:
• You’ll receive support from MTU’s Careers Service, which offers career planning, CV and interview guidance, employer events, and advice to help you find the right opportunities in architecture, construction, and related fields.
• Most graduates from MTU’s honours degree programmes are employed within nine months of graduating, demonstrating strong employability and positive outcomes.
• Your third-year work placement and project collaborations allow you to build valuable connections with practitioners in architecture practices, construction companies, and local authorities, helping you secure potential job opportunities.
• The programme’s accreditation by the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland gives your qualification formal recognition in the industry, enhancing your credibility and supporting long-term professional growth.
• Many students leverage industry links and work placement experiences to secure job offers or follow-on roles immediately after graduation.
Further Academic Progression:
After completing this degree, you can continue your studies to deepen your expertise. Graduates are eligible to progress to the honours degree in Architectural Technology, which provides more advanced technical knowledge and design skills. You may also explore postgraduate opportunities in construction management, sustainable design, or structural technology, opening even more career pathways in the built environment.
