3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Munster Technological University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture at Munster Technological University is a creative, practical design degree that empowers you to shape the spaces where people live, work, and interact. Through a combination of design studio work, technical knowledge, and professional practice, you’ll learn to transform existing buildings and create innovative interior environments that respond to real-world needs.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll dive into the fundamentals of interior architecture with Interior Architecture Studio, learning how to take a concept from idea to form. Graphics will strengthen your ability to communicate ideas visually, while Technology and Materials introduces you to construction systems and essential building knowledge. Architectural History and Design Theory provides context for your creative work by exploring historical and contemporary design.

Year 2

Year two builds on these foundations with more advanced studio projects that challenge you to develop interior design solutions for complex spaces and client briefs. You’ll explore materials and detailing in greater depth, understand environmental and sustainable design principles, and refine your technical drawing and digital skills. This year focuses on broadening your design abilities and integrating creative ideas with practical building constraints.

Year 3

In your final year, you will consolidate your design identity through major projects that tackle larger, real-world challenges. You will complete a work placement, gaining practical experience, professional insight, and industry connections that prepare you for your career. Additionally, professional practice modules will guide you in preparing portfolios and presenting your work to clients and employers.

Focus Areas

Design process and creative thinking, spatial planning and interior detailing, construction technology and material application, professional practice and work placement, history and theory of design.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to design thoughtful interior spaces, apply technical and material knowledge to real projects, communicate professionally through drawings and presentations, and enter the industry with hands-on work experience.

Reputation (Employability and Industry Value)

Munster Technological University is a recognised technological university in Ireland with strong links to the design and built environment industries. Graduates are well regarded for their creative and technical abilities, and the work placement component enhances employability by providing real-world experience before graduation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Munster Technological University, Interior Architecture is learned through hands-on experience rather than theory alone. From the very beginning of the course, students work in the Architecture Factory on the Bishopstown Campus, a purpose-built creative environment designed specifically for architecture and interior architecture students. Learning is centred on studio-based projects, continuous assessment, and real design challenges, helping students develop practical skills, creative confidence, and a strong professional mindset. A structured work placement in the final year ensures students graduate with real industry experience and a clear understanding of professional practice.

This practical approach is supported through the following learning experiences and facilities:

  • Studio-based learning: Students work on live-style design projects throughout the programme, developing concepts, spatial layouts, and detailed interior solutions through drawing, model making, and presentations.

  • Architecture Factory: A dedicated, award-winning facility that provides open studio spaces, design work areas, and collaborative environments shared with architecture-related programmes.

  • Work placement: In Year 3, students complete a minimum five-week professional placement in an architectural, interior design, or related practice, gaining valuable workplace experience and industry exposure.

  • Continuous assessment: Most modules are assessed through portfolios, design projects, presentations, and practical submissions rather than traditional written exams, reflecting how interior architects work in practice.

  • Collaborative group work: Studio projects encourage teamwork, peer learning, and design critique, helping students develop communication and collaboration skills essential to the profession.

  • Field-based learning: Students engage with real buildings and urban spaces to understand scale, materiality, and human interaction within interior environments.

  • Library and research resources: Students have access to the Berkeley Centre library on the Bishopstown Campus, which offers specialist design resources, study areas, and digital research tools to support project work.

Progression & Future Opportunities
