This program is ideal for students who are passionate about creative design, visual communication, culture, and the built environment, and who enjoy problem-solving, conceptual thinking, and hands-on learning.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll dive into the fundamentals of architectural thinking and visual communication through modules like Architectural Design Studio I & II, where you explore space, culture, and place through creative projects. You’ll also take Building Technology Structures 1 & 2 and Environment Services and Materials I, learning how buildings are constructed and how they perform. Courses like Experiencing Architecture and Visual Communications 2 help develop observation and drawing skills, giving you a solid foundation in both creative and technical aspects of architecture.

Year 2

The second year deepens your design work with modules such as Building Technology Structures 3 and Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Survey Course 2, focusing on context and structural systems. Electives like Low Carbon Architecture and City and Adaptation introduce sustainability and urban challenges. This year encourages you to think critically about how architecture interacts with society, the environment, and urban spaces.

Year 3

In the third year, you’ll integrate design with technical and reflective practice through modules like Building Technology and Environment 1 and Case Studies – Intentions and Realities, evaluating real projects and technical strategies. Electives such as Landscape and Society or Applied Technologies expand your knowledge in specialized areas. This year balances analytical study with design exploration, preparing you for more complex architectural challenges.

Year 4

The fourth year is about maturing your design work in scale and complexity through Architectural Design Studio VII and History, Theory and Criticism 6: Critical Theory and Practice. Professional Studies II introduces the ethics and realities of the architectural profession, while Environment Services and Materials IV continues to develop your technical skills. These courses help you refine your design identity and prepare for professional practice.

Year 5

In the final year, you’ll focus on design research and a thesis project through Architectural Design Studio IX & X, Architectural Research 1 & 2, and Thesis Development. Modules like Building Technology Structures VI and Professional Studies 3 ensure you are fully prepared for professional practice or further study. This capstone year allows you to showcase a comprehensive architectural portfolio.

  • Industry exposure through structured work placements that help you apply classroom learning to real-world professional settings.

  • Use of professional architectural software and digital tools integrated into studio projects, developing your skills in modelling, drawing, and digital representation.

  • Field-related learning experiences, including studio visits, collaborative group design activities, and opportunities to explore architectural contexts firsthand.

  • Engagement with guest lectures and industry partnerships, providing insights into contemporary practice, sustainability, and innovative approaches used by practicing architects.

They also collaborate with your department to embed employability skills in your studies and guide you toward relevant work placements.

  • Employment pathways and industry exposure: Graduates have taken roles in architectural practices, construction firms, building contractors, housing associations, commercial in-house design teams, local authorities, teaching and research institutions, and design-led consultancies.
