Curriculum Structure
Year One
In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in both the theory and practice of photography with modules such as Photo Practice: Making Images and Photo Practice: Introduction to Professional Practice, alongside Visual Studies for Photography. You will also explore Critical Skills for Media, learning how visual culture shapes the world and how photographers can contribute meaningfully to it.
Year Two
Second year deepens your understanding of photographic storytelling and context with modules like Histories of Photography and Photography, Theory and Criticism 1, while practical units such as Photo Practice: Narrative and Photo Practice: Photoshop Never Lies strengthen both conceptual and technical skills. You’ll also engage with documentary and specialized photography through Photo Practice: Contemporary Documentary Photography and Photo Practice: Studio to Street.
Year Three
In your third year, you focus on advanced topics such as Curating Photography: In Print and On Screen, Law for Photographers, and Photo Practice: The Photobook, blending creative practice with professional and legal understanding. This year also allows you to tailor your studies through electives like Internship or Media and the Natural World, and to begin a Dissertation Research and Preparation project that informs your final work.
Year Four
Your final year is about realizing your personal photographic voice. You’ll undertake a Thesis Project and a Major Project that showcase your creative range and professional readiness. Alongside these, you’ll build a professional portfolio and engage in advanced practice such as Photo Practice: Professional Skills and Advanced Printing.
