BSc (Hons) in Interior Architecture

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Munster Technological University

Program Overview

Choosing Munster Technological University (MTU) for your BSc (Hons) in Interior Architecture means joining one of Ireland's most technically rigorous and industry-aligned design departments. Based at the Bishopstown campus in Cork, this program is perfect if you want to master the "architecture within the building," focusing on how we can creatively and technically reinvent existing structures for the modern world.

Program Overview

This four-year degree focuses on the structural, technical, and aesthetic transformation of interior spaces, preparing you to handle everything from heritage conservation to high-end commercial fit-outs. It is ideal for students who are as interested in the "how" of construction and building regulations as they are in the "what" of beautiful, functional design.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 Your journey begins with a strong focus on the foundations of architectural language and visual communication. In modules like Design Studio Primer and Design Graphics: Freehand, you will develop your artistic eye, while Tech & Materials Introduction ensures you understand the physical building blocks of the spaces you are designing.

Year 2 During the second year, you’ll transition into more complex commercial and environmental design challenges. You will move into the digital realm with Introduction to 2D AutoCAD and Manual & Digital Visualisation, while learning the essential science behind your designs in Environment-Climate Change & H and Materials & Finishes.

Year 3 Third year is where your professional confidence truly takes off through advanced studio work and real-world exposure. You will tackle Design Studio Adv - Workplaces, master the legalities in Building Regulations, and gain invaluable industry experience through the Work Placement in AEC, putting your skills to the test in a professional firm.

Year 4 Your final year is a deep dive into specialization and high-level research. You will lead an Interdisciplinary Project and complete a significant Research Project Design, culminating in the creation of a professional Architectural Portfolio that showcases your unique expertise to the global design industry.

  • Focus areas (in a string): Adaptive re-use, Building Information Modelling (BIM), sustainable technology, commercial space planning, building regulations, technical detailing, and user-experience design.

  • Learning outcomes (in a string): Technical mastery of AutoCAD and Revit, ability to produce full construction documentation, expert knowledge of Irish building and fire safety codes, and advanced project management for interior architectural schemes.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Munster Technological University (MTU), we don't just teach you how to draw beautiful rooms; we train you to technically deconstruct and reinvent the built environment. From the moment you enter our Bishopstown campus, you are immersed in a high-tech, studio-first culture that mirrors a professional architectural firm. You’ll be working in the award-winning Architecture Factory, a world-class facility that provides the perfect ecosystem for creative experimentation and technical mastery.

Experiential Learning

Our program is uniquely designed to ensure you graduate with a "day-one" readiness for the industry, blending digital innovation with hands-on construction knowledge:

  • The Architecture Factory: You will be based in a truly unique, open-plan learning environment where the studio culture is at the heart of everything. This award-winning facility encourages collaboration across different years and architectural disciplines.

  • Industry-Leading Software Suite: You won’t just be introduced to digital tools—you’ll master them. You will gain expert proficiency in AutoCAD for precise 2D technical drafting and Revit for high-level Building Information Modelling (BIM), the global standard for modern construction.

  • AEC Work Placement: A defining feature of the program is the Work Placement in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector. This provides a real-world internship where you apply your technical skills in a professional practice, building your CV before you even graduate.

  • Field Trips & Site Visits: Learning frequently moves outside the studio. You will participate in visits to landmark project sites and architectural field trips to major European cities to study heritage conservation and contemporary adaptive re-use firsthand.

  • "Live" Studio Projects: You will engage in studio projects based on real-world briefs, often collaborating with local community groups or industry partners to solve authentic design and technical challenges.

  • Advanced Prototyping Workshops: Beyond digital renders, you have access to specialized workshops for model-making and material testing, allowing you to build physical prototypes of your structural and furniture designs.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: You will often work in teams with students from the Architectural Technology and Architecture streams, simulating the multidisciplinary nature of professional construction projects.

  • Research Design Labs: The program integrates with the MTU Department of Architecture Research, allowing you to explore cutting-edge themes like climate-responsive design and regenerative materials in a laboratory setting.

  • The Bishopstown Library: You’ll have full access to extensive architectural archives, technical journals, and specialized research databases that support your final-year thesis and design projects.
