BSc Quantitative Finance

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Maynooth University

Program Overview

Choosing the BSc in Quantitative Finance at Maynooth University is a brilliant decision if you have a passion for high-level problem solving and want to be at the heart of the global financial engine. This is an elite, interdisciplinary program that transforms you into a "triple threat" by mastering finance, mathematics, and computer science all at once.

Program Overview

This four-year degree is designed for ambitious students who want to master the mathematical models and coding languages that power modern stock markets and FinTech innovations. You will study everything from derivative pricing to algorithmic trading, preparing you for a high-impact career where data-driven decision-making is the ultimate competitive advantage.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 Your first year is all about building an unbreakable foundation across three different departments to ensure you have the technical range for advanced finance. You will dive into the core mechanics of the economy through Introduction to Finance and Microeconomics, while simultaneously sharpening your analytical tools in Differential Calculus and Introduction to Computer Science.

Year 2 In the second year, the program steps up the intensity as you begin to see how complex data transforms into financial strategy. You will develop specialized technical skills in Financial Management and Corporate Finance, while mastering the logic required for financial modeling through intensive modules in Algorithms and Data Structures and Linear Algebra.

Year 3 Year three is arguably the most exciting part of the journey, as it focuses on bridging the gap between the classroom and the professional trading floor. You have the incredible opportunity to spend this year on a Professional Work Placement in a leading financial institution, or you can choose a Research Project or Study Abroad year to further specialize in areas like Econometrics and Statistical Methods.

Year 4 In your final year, you will reach the "Quant" peak by tackling the same high-level challenges faced by industry leaders in London or Wall Street. You will master the sophisticated mathematics of the markets in Derivative Securities and Fixed Income Securities, while tailoring your expertise through advanced electives like Machine Learning or International Finance.

  • Focus areas (in a string): Algorithmic trading, financial engineering, stochastic calculus, machine learning in finance, risk management, and big data analytics.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the BSc in Quantitative Finance at Maynooth University, we don't just want you to understand the theories of the financial markets—we want you to build the models that drive them. This program is uniquely interdisciplinary, meaning your "classroom" shifts between the high-spec computer labs of the Eolas Building and the analytical research hubs of the Mathematics and Finance departments. By the time you graduate, you’ll have transitioned from a student to a technical expert, having applied complex calculus and coding to real-world market data.

Experiential Learning

Your journey to becoming a "Quant" is defined by immersive, hands-on sessions where you use industry-standard technology to solve the same problems faced by analysts on Wall Street and in London. Whether you're in a specialized laboratory or out in the field on a professional placement, the focus is always on translating mathematical logic into financial success:

  • Year-Long Professional Placement: You have the opportunity to spend your third year on an accredited 9–12 month work placement. This isn't just "work experience"—you'll be embedded in the quantitative teams of global giants like PwC, EY, or major banking institutions, applying your skills in a professional setting.

  • The Eolas Building Labs: As a Quant student, you’ll have access to the €20M Eolas Building, a state-of-the-art ICT hub. Here, you’ll participate in "Laboratory Sessions" where you use high-performance computing to test financial models and run simulations.

  • Industry-Standard Software: You won't just learn about software; you will master it. You’ll become proficient in C++, Python, and R for financial programming, alongside statistical tools like Minitab or SPSS and advanced Microsoft Excel for corporate modeling.

  • Collaborative Group Projects: Throughout the four years, you’ll engage in team-based projects that mirror the collaborative environment of a modern FinTech firm. You might work in a group to develop an algorithmic trading strategy or build a risk-assessment model for a mock portfolio.

  • The De Chastelain Library & Digital Resources: You have 24/7 access to specialized financial databases and research portals. This allows you to pull real-time market data to use in your Final Year Research Project, where you’ll tackle a high-level quantitative problem under the guidance of leading experts.

  • SPUR (Summer Programme for Undergraduate Research): Ambitious students can apply for a funded six-week research placement during the summer. This allows you to work directly with a professor on cutting-edge financial research, gaining a massive edge if you're considering a future in PhD research or high-level consulting.

  • Guest Lectures from Industry Quants: Maynooth regularly brings in professionals from the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Dublin. These sessions provide "inside-the-industry" perspectives on how AI and Machine Learning are currently disrupting the trading floor.
