Curriculum structure

Year 1
In your first year you build a strong foundation in understanding people and society. You’ll study modules such as Introduction to Psychology for Social Care, Introduction to Society and Social Care and Critical Skills Development, where you learn the basics of human behaviour, communication, self-awareness and the core values that guide social care work. You’ll also explore Understanding Disability and Creative Approaches to Social Care Work, giving you broad insight into diversity and practical ways to engage with individuals and communities.

Year 2
Second year brings increasing focus on applied knowledge and real practice. You undertake your first Practice Placement 1, which lets you work directly with service users under supervision, while classroom modules like Communicating for Social Care, Legal Studies 1 and Managing Relationships in Social Care help you refine professional interaction and understand the legal and ethical context of care work. This year builds confidence in working within complex social environments.

Year 3
In Year 3 you expand both theoretical understanding and practical expertise. Professional Practice 2 and Society and Social Care deepen your grasp of how social care systems operate, while Society Mental, Emotional and Cognitive Health equips you to respond to diverse needs. You also continue placement work (Practice Placement 2) alongside modules that help you connect theory with real-world interventions.

Year 4
Your final year prepares you for professional practice and leadership. You’ll complete advanced modules such as Addiction and Substance Misuse, Community Studies, Equality, Cultural Diversity and Leadership and Organisational Change in Social Care, integrating your skills for practice in varied settings. This practical approach prepares you to work effectively with individuals and communities facing complex social challenges.

Your experiential learning includes:

  • Supervised professional placements
You complete two substantial practice placements in real social care settings, such as disability services, mental health supports, addiction services, youth and family projects or community organisations. These placements allow you to apply theory in practice while working under qualified supervision.

Modules like Professional Practice and Communicating for Social Care focus on real case scenarios, helping you develop confidence in professional communication, relationship-building and ethical decision-making.

  • Skills development workshops

  • Legal and ethical application
Through applied legal studies and ethics modules, you learn how legislation, safeguarding and professional standards guide decision-making in real care environments.

  • Community-focused learning
Projects and coursework often explore real community issues such as social exclusion, addiction, disability, homelessness and inequality, helping you understand how social care supports operate at both individual and community levels.

  • Research-informed practice
In later years, you undertake a research project that allows you to investigate a social care issue in depth, strengthening your analytical, evaluation and evidence-based practice skills.

  • Professional identity development
