4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) at Maynooth University is a four-year Level 8 professional degree designed to prepare you to become a qualified primary school teacher in Ireland. You’ll study how children learn and develop, explore curriculum and pedagogy, and gain extensive teaching experience in real classrooms — all grounded in a child-centred, active educational philosophy inspired by Froebel.
📘 Curriculum Structure
Year 1
In your first year, you build a foundation in education theory and professional practice. You’ll explore core education modules that examine how children learn, introduce you to psychology, philosophy and sociology of education, and begin school-based observation work. This year sets the stage for understanding teaching as both a reflective and practical profession.
Year 2
Second year deepens your understanding of how to support primary learners across the curriculum. You’ll study curriculum design, assessment, classroom management and pedagogy, and continue your school placements, gaining hands-on experience. This year also includes a unique Gaeltacht placement — two fortnight blocks in an Irish-language immersion setting — that strengthens language and cultural teaching skills.
Year 3
In Year 3, your practice in schools becomes more extensive and you engage with specialised education topics such as inclusive practice, supporting diverse learners and advanced curriculum methodologies. You’ll further develop reflective professional skills and connect theory with deeper classroom experience.
Year 4
The final year brings advanced professional inquiry and practice together. You’ll complete extended school placements, capstone education projects and modules that address leadership, community engagement and the reflective teacher’s role. This prepares you to step confidently into qualified teaching roles upon graduation.

At Maynooth University, experiential learning is at the heart of the Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) and reflects the university’s strong Froebel-inspired, child-centred philosophy. From your first year, you gradually move from observation to full classroom responsibility, combining theory with sustained, supported teaching practice in real primary schools. Purpose-designed education spaces, reflective practice, and close links with partner schools ensure you graduate confident and professionally ready:

Curriculum & Pedagogy Workshops: Core primary subjects (literacy, numeracy, SESE, arts, wellbeing) are taught through interactive workshops, allowing you to experience the same active methodologies used with children.
Microteaching & Reflective Practice: You engage in microteaching sessions, peer feedback, and reflective journals that help you refine lesson delivery, classroom management, and professional judgement.
Digital Teaching Tools: You develop skills in educational technologies, including digital learning platforms and classroom technologies used in modern primary schools.
Research-Informed Practice: Education research modules and a final-year project help you evaluate teaching strategies and apply evidence-based approaches to classroom practice.
Library & Academic Supports: You have access to Maynooth’s libraries, curriculum resources, digital journals, and learning support services, supporting lesson planning, placement preparation and reflective study.
