4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching – Gaeltacht) at Maynooth University is a four-year professional teaching degree that prepares you to become a qualified primary school teacher with strong Irish language and cultural skills. This route is ideal if you want to teach in Irish-medium environments and value immersive language experiences alongside your professional preparation to work with children aged 4–12 years. You’ll combine academic study of education with extensive teaching practice and unique Gaeltacht placements that develop your confidence and competence in both English and Irish school settings.
📘 Curriculum Structure
Year 1
In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in education theory and professional practice. Core modules centre on child development, teaching methodology, psychology, philosophy and sociology of education, while early observation placements introduce you to the primary school environment. You’ll begin developing reflective skills that will support your practice throughout the degree.
Year 2
Second year continues to deepen your understanding of teaching and learning across the primary curriculum. You’ll study pedagogy, assessment, inclusive practice and curriculum design, alongside structured school placements where you start planning and delivering lessons. Unique to this programme is your first Gaeltacht placement — a two-fortnight immersive experience that builds your Irish language use and cultural understanding in an educational context.
Year 3
Year 3 broadens your practical and academic experience. You explore advanced educational topics such as supporting diverse learners and community engagement, and continue school placements with increasing responsibility in planning, teaching and assessment. You also complete your second Gaeltacht placement — another two-week immersion that further enhances your Irish teaching confidence and cultural fluency.
Year 4
Your final year synthesises your learning through advanced professional practice and inquiry. You complete extended placements in primary schools, engage deeply with curriculum leadership and inclusive education, and undertake research projects that link classroom practice with educational evidence and reflection. This prepares you to step into qualified teaching roles confidently.
At Maynooth University, experiential learning is central to the B.Ed (Primary Teaching – Gaeltacht) and is shaped by a strong Froebel-inspired, child-centred philosophy combined with immersive Irish-language practice. From Year 1 onwards, you develop as a bilingual teacher through progressive school placements, hands-on pedagogy workshops, and compulsory Gaeltacht immersions that strengthen both professional teaching skills and confidence teaching through Gaeilge. Learning is carefully scaffolded so theory, practice, and reflection develop together:
This practical learning is delivered through the following experiences:
Progressive Primary School Placements: You complete extensive, supervised placements across all four years, moving from observation to planning, teaching, assessment, and full classroom responsibility in primary schools.
Compulsory Gaeltacht Immersion Placements: A defining feature of this pathway is two Gaeltacht placements (two-week blocks), where you live and work in an Irish-language environment, strengthening fluency, cultural understanding, and confidence teaching through Irish.
Froebel Department Pedagogy Workshops: Teaching is grounded in hands-on workshops within the Froebel Department, modelling active, play-based and inquiry-led methodologies used in Irish-medium and English-medium primary schools.
Microteaching & Reflective Practice: You take part in microteaching sessions, peer feedback, and reflective journals that help refine lesson delivery, classroom management, and professional judgement in both Irish and English.
Curriculum & Language Integration: Core primary subjects (literacy, numeracy, SESE, arts, wellbeing) are taught through integrated Gaeilge-medium approaches, preparing you for Gaelscoileanna and bilingual school settings.
Digital Teaching Tools: You develop skills using educational technologies and digital learning platforms commonly used in modern primary classrooms, including Irish-language teaching resources.
Research-Informed Practice: Education research modules and a final-year inquiry project support evidence-based teaching and reflective professional growth.
Library & Academic Supports: You have access to Maynooth University’s libraries, curriculum resources, Irish-language materials, digital journals, and learning supports, underpinning lesson planning and placement preparation.
Graduates of the B.Ed (Primary Teaching – Gaeltacht) from Maynooth University enter a highly valued professional pathway, combining full primary teaching qualification with strong Irish-language competence. The programme prepares you to work confidently as a Primary School Teacher, with particular demand for graduates in Gaelscoileanna, Gaeltacht schools, and Irish-medium streams within English-medium schools. Thanks to immersive Gaeltacht placements and sustained classroom experience, graduates are recognised for their bilingual teaching ability, cultural awareness, and classroom readiness:
Career & Professional Support: Students benefit from structured teaching practice supervision, mentoring from experienced educators, and guidance on securing posts in Irish-medium and English-medium primary schools.
Strong Employment Demand: There is consistent national demand for qualified Irish-medium primary teachers, giving graduates strong employment prospects and geographic mobility across Ireland.
School & Language Networks: Gaeltacht placements and school partnerships help you build professional connections within Irish-language education communities, often leading directly to employment opportunities.
Long-Term Professional Value: The degree leads to Teaching Council registration, offering recognised professional status, career security, and long-term progression opportunities within primary education.
Graduate Destinations: Alumni work in Gaelscoileanna, Gaeltacht primary schools, DEIS schools, mainstream primary schools with Irish-medium instruction, and education initiatives promoting the Irish language and culture.
Further Academic Progression:
After qualifying, graduates can progress to postgraduate study in areas such as Irish-Medium Education, Inclusive and Special Education, Educational Leadership, Literacy (Gaeilge), Educational Psychology, or Curriculum and Assessment. These pathways support advancement into roles such as Special Education Coordinator, Deputy Principal or Principal, Irish-Language Education Advisor, Curriculum Developer, or Education Researcher, allowing you to shape Irish-medium education at a wider level.
