Bachelor of Science (Honours) Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Munster Technological University

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology (MT 878) at Munster Technological University is a four-year honours degree that trains students to become environmental monitoring specialists by combining scientific knowledge with modern instrumentation and sustainability principles. It suits students interested in air and water quality analysis, environmental measurement technologies, and sustainable environmental solutions, with strong laboratory, field, data and technical skills training.

Curriculum Structure

First Year – Foundations of Science & Monitoring

In the first year, students establish core scientific and analytical foundations through modules such as Environmental Instrumentation, Mathematics for Science, Chemical Principles, Fundamental Physics, Climate Change, and Green Team/Sustainability and Teamwork. These units introduce environmental measurement tools, data analysis skills, chemistry and physics fundamentals, and the scientific basis of climate and sustainability.

Second Year – Technology & Measurement Methods

In the second year, students progress to more advanced technical and analytical content with specialist modules in electronics and sensor calibration, statistics and data analysis, environmental GIS, smart sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT), and environmental quality monitoring techniques. This year deepens students’ ability to operate, calibrate and interpret data from modern environmental instruments.

Third Year – Placement and Applied Practice

In the third year, learners undertake a work placement with an industry partner or research group, often in environmental monitoring, consulting or applied research settings. The placement builds professional experience and real-world application of environmental monitoring, data interpretation, reporting and sustainability assessment.

Fourth Year – Project & Advanced Integration

In the final year, students complete a major technical project focused on environmental monitoring, measurement technologies or sustainability solutions, alongside advanced modules that integrate environmental science, instrumentation, green auditing, water and air quality assessment, and legal/technical context. This year emphasizes independent research, specialist application and professional readiness.

Focus areas
Environmental monitoring, air and water quality analysis, instrumentation and sensors, data analysis and statistics, environmental GIS, sustainability technologies.

Learning outcomes
Apply scientific and technical principles to environmental monitoring; operate and calibrate modern instruments; analyse environmental data; assess air and water quality; integrate sustainability and legal aspects; conduct independent environmental research.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
This NFQ Level 8 honours BSc aligns with Irish higher education standards and equips graduates with technical, instrument-based competencies for professional practice in environmental monitoring, compliance and sustainability sectors.

Reputation (employability rankings):
Munster Technological University is recognised for hands-on science and engineering education; its science programmes benefit from strong laboratory training, industry placement opportunities and connections that support graduate employability in environmental consultancy, monitoring laboratories, regulatory authorities and industry sectors.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The experiential learning is a core pillar of the programme, characterised by the following specific components:

  • Mandatory Work Placement: A 12-15 week professional placement in Year 3 within environmental consultancies, state agencies (e.g., Environmental Protection Agency), the energy sector, or other relevant organisations.

  • High Proportion of Practical Work: 50% of the coursework involves direct hands-on experience through fieldwork and laboratory practicals.

  • Fieldwork & Site Visits: The programme begins in Year 1 with a field visit module (The Environment Around Us), setting a precedent for applied learning. Site visits are integrated throughout to connect theory with real-world sites.

  • Specific Software & Digital Tools: Training includes computer mapping (typically Geographic Information Systems - GIS), data analysis, and core IT skills using Microsoft Office applications, as covered in the Information Technology 1 module.

  • Group Projects & Collaboration: Teamwork is emphasised from the start. For example, the Communications in Science module requires students to work as a team to research an environmental issue and deliver a joint poster and oral presentation.

  • International Study Options: Opportunities include studying abroad at partner universities (e.g., Mid-Sweden University) via Erasmus+ or participating in a two-week international summer school in the Netherlands or Sweden.

  • Professional Accreditation: The degree is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), allowing students to become student members and connect with the professional industry body.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of MTU's BSc (Hons) Environmental Science and Sustainable Technology (MT878) achieve excellent employability through hands-on training in air/water quality monitoring and waste management, addressing Ireland's green economy needs. The program emphasizes practical skills via industry placements and instrumentation labs, leading to specialist roles in environmental compliance and sustainability.

Career Support:

  • MTU Careers Service coordinates Year 3 work placements with environmental firms, EPA, or pharmachem plants, plus technical skills training in green auditing and data analytics.

  • High employment rates as STEM graduates; entry-level salaries €35,000–€45,000 annually in monitoring and consultancy roles.

  • Partnerships with CAPPA research center, EPA, and industry for emissions monitoring projects, waste reduction initiatives, and guest lectures.

  • NFQ Level 8 Honours degree provides long-term accreditation for environmental technician roles and global green job mobility.

  • Outcomes include air/water analysts, environmental consultants, waste managers, and R&D specialists in pharma, local authorities, and consultancies.

Further Academic Progression: Graduates qualify for MTU MSc by research or PhD under CAPPA supervision in environmental monitoring or mass spectrometry, often funded. Level 8 standing supports entry to related Master's in sustainable technology nationwide. Placement experience facilitates international programs via Erasmus+.
