BDS (Hons) Dentistry

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University College Cork UCC

Program Overview

The BDS (Hons) Dentistry programme at University College Cork is a five-year professional degree that prepares students to become qualified dental practitioners. It blends strong biomedical science teaching with early and continuous clinical training, helping students build both scientific understanding and hands-on patient care skills.

This programme suits students who are strong in science, detail-oriented, and interested in healthcare careers that combine practical clinical work with direct patient interaction.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students focus on building a solid foundation in biomedical sciences essential for dentistry. They study subjects such as Principles of Human Structure for Dentistry, Topographical Anatomy, Introduction to Biomolecules and Metabolic Pathways, along with Introduction to Physiology for Dentistry I and II and Fundamentals of Dentistry I and II. This year is mainly about understanding the human body and the basic principles behind dental science before moving into clinical practice.

Year 2

In Year 2, students deepen their scientific knowledge and begin linking it more directly to dental practice. Modules include Neuroanatomy and Embryology, Dental Morphology, Histology and Embryology, Molecular Biology, Physiology for Dental Students, as well as Foundations of Medicine, Mechanisms of Disease, Principles of Pharmacology, and Introduction to Clinical Dentistry. This year helps students understand how diseases develop and how they relate to oral health.

Year 3

Year 3 marks the transition into more applied and clinical learning. Students study Dental Pharmacology, Practical Restorative Dentistry, and Manifestations of Systemic and Oral Disease, while also developing clinical competence through modules like Development of Clinical Skills, Theoretical Basis for Clinical Dentistry, and Behavioural and Ethical Dental Practice. This year focuses on preparing students for real patient care in supervised environments.

Year 4

In Year 4, students gain substantial clinical exposure and begin working more directly with patients. They study Clinical Medical Sciences in Dentistry, Introduction to Dental Surgery, Clinical Adult Oral Health, and Introduction to Oral Health and Development I. The emphasis is on applying theoretical knowledge in real clinical settings under supervision.

Year 5

The final year is focused on advanced clinical training and professional readiness. Students study Dental Surgery, Clinical Restorative Dentistry, Oral Health and Development, and Theoretical Dentistry. By the end of this year, students are expected to demonstrate confidence and competence in independent dental practice under professional standards.
