University College Cork History

University College Cork or UCC was previously known as Queens College of Cork. It is located in the south -west of Ireland in the city of Cork and came into existence on 30th December 1845 with 23 professors and 181 students. The Universities Act, 1997, made the university college a constituent university of the National University of Ireland and made the UCC a full university except the awarding of degrees and diplomas.

University College Cork began with 3 major faculties namely Medicine, Arts, and Law and presently the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs such as Applied Plant Biology, Practice Enhancement for Quality Nursing and Healthcare, English, Irish Writing and Film, Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment to name a few.

University College Cork has 8 schools and academic departments such as School of Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Sociology and Philosophy, School of Pharmacy and more. The University offers special linguistic courses in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies.

University College Cork is named as top performing university by the European Commission and has obtained A Grade among 1200 universities. The University is the first university in Europe was awarded a Gold Star from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

University College Cork’s Stone Corridor is on public display In Ireland for its largest collection of Ogham Stones in the main Quadrangle. Part-time education programs known as Adult Continuing Education is available for people who wish to pursue correspondence studies along with their work.
