The institution began as one of three Queen's Colleges in Belfast, Cork, and Galway in 1845. Under the Irish Universities Act of 1908, it was renamed University College, Cork. The university was designated National University of Ireland, Cork, by the Universities Act of 1997, and by a Ministerial Order of 1998, it was called University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork, though it is still largely universally known as University College Cork.
