Program Overview

The Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) at University College Cork is a five-year integrated degree designed to train you as a professional pharmacist through a strong mix of science, clinical learning, and real-world experience. Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year focuses on building a solid scientific foundation for pharmacy. You will study modules such as Principles of Human Structure, Biochemistry, Introduction to Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Introduction to Pharmaceutics: Formulation Science, alongside Pharmacy Practice I and Foundation Pharmacology to give you early insight into the profession.

Year 2

In second year, you deepen your understanding of how medicines work in the body and how they are designed and delivered. Core subjects include Physiological and Pathological Systems, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery, with increased laboratory work to strengthen your practical and analytical skills.

Year 3

Year three introduces more clinically focused learning as you study Clinical Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacokinetics, and applied Medicinal Chemistry. This year often includes a summer placement, allowing you to gain hands-on experience in real pharmacy settings and begin developing confidence in patient-focused care.

Year 4

In fourth year, your training becomes more advanced and practice-driven. You will cover Pharmacy Practice II, Advanced Therapeutics, and Regulatory Affairs, while continuing professional placements that prepare you for the responsibilities of modern pharmacy practice in healthcare systems.

Year 5

The final year is the MPharm stage required for professional qualification. You will complete advanced clinical and professional studies alongside an extended practice placement, integrating scientific knowledge, clinical judgement, and professional skills needed to work safely and effectively as a pharmacist.
