Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You begin by learning the foundations of public health through subjects like Introduction to Public Health, Epidemiology I, Determinants of Health and Microbiology in Society. Year 2
In second year, you start connecting public health to real-world systems. You study Epidemiology II, Public Health Issues, Management and Planning of Public Health Systems, Nutrition and Social Research Methods, learning how health services are organised and how data is collected to inform health decisions.

Year 4
In your final year, you focus on leadership, policy and advanced research through subjects like Health Economics, Public Health Advocacy and Advanced Applied Epidemiology. Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UCC, Public Health Sciences is built around real-world learning, so you don’t just study health problems — you learn how to solve them. From early in the degree, you work with health data, research tools and case studies, and as you progress you gain hands-on experience through laboratories, fieldwork and professional placements. By the time you graduate, you’ll have practical experience that reflects how public health professionals actually work.

That hands-on experience includes:

  • Epidemiology and data analysis tools
Through modules in Epidemiology and Applied Health Research, you learn how to work with health data, analyse disease trends and interpret real population-health statistics.

  • Laboratory-based learning
In subjects like Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Studies, you work with lab-based techniques to understand how pathogens spread and how they are controlled.

  • Public health research projects
You design and carry out research projects, especially in your final year, learning how to collect, analyse and present data on real public health issues.

  • Community and health system engagement
You study real health programmes, policies and interventions used in Ireland and internationally, helping you understand how public health operates on the ground.

  • Library and digital research access
You use UCC’s extensive digital health databases, journals and research resources to support your assignments, reports and final-year project.

  • Team-based learning
Many modules involve group work and presentations, helping you develop communication and teamwork skills that are essential in public health careers.
