4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Maynooth University

Program Overview

This four-year Bachelor of Civil Law is ideal for students who are curious about how law shapes society, government, and everyday life. It offers a strong, respected legal education with an international outlook, while helping you build the critical thinking, research, and communication skills that law graduates are known for.

Curriculum structure (short overview)

Year 1 – Getting started with law
You’ll be introduced to how legal systems work and how lawyers think. Core subjects like Legal Systems, Constitutional Law, and Legal Skills help you understand the foundations of Irish law while learning how to read cases, research, and write clearly.

Year 2 – Building core knowledge
In second year, you move into the heart of legal study with subjects such as Contract Law, Criminal Law, and EU Law. These modules show how law operates in real situations and sharpen your ability to analyse and argue legal issues.

Year 3 – Broadening your perspective
Third year encourages you to think more critically and comparatively about law. Modules like Administrative Law, Jurisprudence, and European Union Law explore how law interacts with politics, rights, and society across different systems.

Year 4 – Specialising and preparing for the future
In your final year, you can focus on areas that interest you most, with options such as International Law, Human Rights Law, and Company Law. This year brings everything together and prepares you for further study or law-related careers.

  • Learning informed by Maynooth’s active law research culture, giving students exposure to current legal debates and scholarship

  • Group projects and presentations that build teamwork, confidence, and clear legal communication

  • Use of Moodle, the university’s online learning platform, to access legal materials, submit assessments, and engage with coursework

  • Regular development of core legal skills, including legal writing, referencing, critical reading, and independent research

  • Access to quiet study areas, collaborative learning spaces, and academic support within a close-knit campus community
