BSc in Biomedical Science

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Maynooth University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science degree at Maynooth University brings together chemistry, biology and medicine to help you understand how drugs are designed, tested and how they work inside the body. It’s perfect for students who enjoy chemistry and want to apply it to healthcare, biotechnology and pharmaceutical innovation.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You begin by building a strong scientific foundation through ChemistryBiology and Mathematics, along with a fourth science subject such as Computer Science or Physics. This year introduces you to how molecules, cells and reactions work, while also developing your basic laboratory and problem-solving skills.

Year 2
In second year, you move deeper into how chemistry and biology connect in living systems. You study modules such as BiochemistryMolecular Biology of the CellOrganic Chemistry and Spectroscopy and Analytical Chemistry, learning how drug molecules are structured, measured and understood. Your lab work becomes more detailed and more closely linked to real pharmaceutical science.

Year 3
This year focuses on how chemicals interact with biological systems. You explore Biomedical Chemistry of Drug ActionHeterocyclic, Carbohydrate and Peptide Chemistry and Biomolecule Production and Structure Determination, gaining insight into how modern medicines are designed and analysed at a molecular level.

Year 4
In your final year, you tackle advanced topics such as Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Design and Bioinorganic Chemistry. You also complete an extended research project or industry-based placement, allowing you to apply everything you’ve learned to real pharmaceutical and biomedical problems.

Focus areas

Pharmaceutical chemistry, biomedical chemistry, organic and analytical chemistry, molecular biology, drug design, biomolecules.

Learning outcomes

A deep understanding of how drugs and biological molecules work, strong laboratory and analytical skills, and the ability to investigate, interpret and solve complex scientific problems.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

This is a Level 8 Honours Bachelor’s degree on Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications, recognised for careers in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, research and postgraduate study worldwide.

Reputation (employability & recognition)

Maynooth University is well known for producing highly skilled science graduates who are in demand across Ireland’s pharmaceutical, biopharma and life-science industries.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Maynooth University, this degree is built around learning by doing. From your first year onward, you spend time in modern teaching and research laboratories, working with real chemicals, biological samples and analytical equipment. As you progress, your practical work becomes more specialised and research-focused, and by final year you’re carrying out your own independent project or industry-linked placement, just like a professional scientist.

That hands-on experience includes:

  • Chemistry and biochemistry teaching labs
You work in dedicated university labs for organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, learning how to synthesise, test and analyse compounds and biomolecules.

  • Advanced analytical equipment
Through modules like Spectroscopy and Analytical Chemistry and Biomolecule Structure Determination, you use tools such as spectroscopy, chromatography and molecular analysis systems to identify and study drug-like molecules.

  • Drug-focused laboratory work
In subjects such as Biomedical Chemistry of Drug Action and Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Design, you explore how medicines are created and how they interact with biological targets, linking chemistry directly to real medical applications.

  • Research-based final-year project
In your final year, you complete a major research project where you design experiments, collect and analyse data, and present your findings — giving you experience that closely matches postgraduate study or industrial research.

  • Option for work placement or internship
Depending on availability, you can choose a placement route in your final year, giving you experience in a real pharmaceutical, biomedical or research environment.

  • Team-based lab and project work
Many practical classes involve working in small groups, helping you build teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills that are essential in scientific careers.

  • Library and digital research resources
You have access to extensive scientific journals, chemical databases and research support services to help you plan experiments, write reports and support your project work.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Maynooth University step into careers where chemistry directly supports healthcare, drug development and biotechnology. With your strong training in medicinal chemistry, analytical techniques and biological systems, you’ll be well prepared for roles such as Medicinal Chemist, Quality Control Analyst, Pharmaceutical Scientist, or Biomedical Research Assistant in the global life-science industry.

That means this degree opens doors to a wide range of exciting career paths:

  • Strong demand in Ireland’s pharmaceutical sector
Ireland is one of the world’s leading hubs for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, so graduates with drug-focused chemistry skills are highly sought after.

  • Industry-ready laboratory skills
You graduate with experience using modern analytical instruments, chemical synthesis methods and biological testing techniques that employers expect in regulated pharmaceutical and biotech labs.

  • Access to high-value research and quality roles
Graduates move into drug development, formulation, analytical testing, regulatory support, environmental monitoring and biomedical research positions.

  • International recognition
Your Level 8 honours degree is recognised across Europe and internationally, allowing you to work or study abroad.

  • Where graduates go
Alumni work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, hospitals, diagnostics labs, contract research organisations, environmental testing facilities and academic research groups.

Further Academic Progression

After completing this degree, you can progress to postgraduate study in areas such as Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science, Drug Discovery, Biotechnology, Molecular Medicine or Analytical Chemistry.
