BSc Microbiology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University College Cork UCC

Program Overview

Program Overview
UCC’s BSc (Hons) in Microbiology is ideal if you’re curious about how microbes shape human health, food production, and the environment. You’ll combine strong scientific foundations with hands-on lab work, preparing you for careers in healthcare, biotech, research, or further study.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You start with a broad science base through core subjects such as Microbiology, Biochemistry, Plant Science, and Zoology. This year builds essential lab skills and scientific thinking while helping you confirm your interest in microbiology.

Year 2
The focus shifts toward microbiology and molecular life sciences, with modules like Microbial Biology, Molecular Biology, and Statistics. You can also choose electives, allowing you to explore related areas while deepening your understanding of microbes at a cellular level.

Year 3
You fully specialise in microbiology, studying areas such as Medical Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, and Microbial Genetics. Practical laboratory work becomes more advanced, helping you gain confidence with real scientific techniques.

Year 4
In final year, you tailor your studies through advanced options and complete a supervised research project, where you investigate a microbiology topic in depth. This is excellent preparation for industry roles or postgraduate research.

Focus Areas:
Medical microbiology, food and environmental microbiology, molecular biology, laboratory and research skills

Learning Outcomes:
Strong understanding of microbial systems, practical lab competence, data analysis skills, and the ability to communicate scientific results clearly

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
NFQ Level 8 honours science degree, aligned with careers in biotech, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and research

Reputation (Employability & Rankings):
UCC is ranked among the top 250 universities worldwide (QS Rankings), with strong graduate outcomes in science and life sciences

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UCC, you learn microbiology by doing it. From early on, you’ll spend time in dedicated teaching laboratories, developing practical skills like microbial culturing, microscopy, and molecular techniques, and by final year you’ll complete an independent research project that reflects real scientific work in academia or industry. This hands-on approach means you graduate with confidence in the lab, not just knowledge from textbooks:

  • Specialist microbiology teaching laboratories used throughout the programme for structured practical classes

  • Extensive laboratory hours each year, building core skills in microbiological and molecular techniques

  • Final-year supervised research project, allowing you to investigate a real research question with academic staff

  • Access to major UCC research centres, including APC Microbiome Ireland and the Environmental Research Institute, linked to the School of Microbiology

  • UCC Library and online databases, with dedicated microbiology journals, databases, and research support

  • Collaborative lab work and group-based practicals, reflecting how professional scientific teams operate

Progression & Future Opportunities

A degree in Microbiology from UCC opens doors to a wide range of science-based careers, with graduates valued for their strong lab skills and problem-solving ability. Many move straight into roles such as Microbiology Laboratory Technician, Quality Assurance Scientist (food or pharma), Biotechnology Scientist, or Environmental Microbiologist:

  • UCC Careers Service offers one-to-one career guidance, CV and interview support, employer talks, and access to graduate roles through the UCC Careers Network

  • Excellent graduate outcomes: around 95% of Microbiology graduates progress to employment or further study shortly after graduation

  • Strong industry links: Cork is a major hub for biotech, pharmaceutical, and food industries, and UCC’s links through centres like APC Microbiome Ireland strengthen career pathways

  • Recognised qualification: an NFQ Level 8 honours degree, respected by employers and institutions in Ireland and internationally

  • Clear outcomes: graduates work across healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food safety, environmental science, and research sectors

Further Academic Progression:
Graduates often continue to postgraduate study at UCC, including MSc programmes related to microbiology and the microbiome, or progress to PhD research. This route is ideal if you’re aiming for specialist, research-led, or academic careers.
