Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the most exciting aspects of the BSc in Psychology at Dublin City University (DCU) is that you won't just be sitting in a lecture hall—you’ll be getting your hands "science-dirty" from the very beginning. DCU was the first university in Ireland to integrate a professional work placement directly into a psychology degree, which tells you everything you need to know about our commitment to making you "career-ready." You’ll move between high-tech EEG labs and community-based projects, learning to use professional-grade tools to measure everything from brain waves to the subconscious gaze of an infant.

You will sharpen your professional edge through a combination of elite facilities and real-world industry immersion:

  • The INTRA Program (Integrated Training): This is the crown jewel of the DCU experience. In your third year, you'll spend a semester on a paid professional placement in clinical, corporate, or research settings. Previous students have worked in hospitals, HR departments of multinational tech firms, and forensic units.

  • Industry-Standard Software: You’ll graduate with mastery of the same tools used by professional data scientists and psychologists, including SPSS, R, Python, Qualtrics, and experimental builders like E-Prime and SuperLab.

  • Clinical Neuropsychology Lab: This space is packed with specialist equipment and standardized assessment tools used to study neurocognitive problems associated with everything from addiction to dementia.

  • Group Research Projects: In your third year, you’ll work in small "research teams" to design and execute a study from scratch, replicating the collaborative environment of a professional research institute.

  • The DCU Psychology Skills Hub: This is a unique digital and physical space where you can get one-to-one peer support for complex statistics or learn new digital tools like Zotero for research management.

  • Small Class Sizes: With a cap of approximately 40 students per year, you get unprecedented access to laboratory equipment and personalized mentorship from our expert PhD demonstrators.
