Program Overview

The emphasis on new drug research has been one of the unique characteristics of Japanese pharmaceutical sciences since its dawn in the mid 19th Century (Meiji era). Graduates from Japanese pharmaceutical universities have contributed a great deal to human health through innovation of various excellent new drugs. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences succeeds this tradition, and has the aim to nurture specialists who engage in research, development, manufacturing and education of pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, hygiene methods and products and environmental protection methods and products. The curriculum of the Department is constructed accordingly.Chemical substances studied in the Department relate them to biological activities on human, animal and other living creatures, irrespective of whether their actions are beneficial or unwanted. To learn about human body, diseases, and interactions between bioactive chemicals and functions of human body is the essential element of pharmaceutical sciences. With the increase of people's concern on health accompanying the progress of ageing society, the social expectation on the contribution by pharmaceutical graduates is increasing.
