3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Malta

Program Overview

This degree is ideal for students who are interested in understanding faith, ethics, and leadership in a deeper and more meaningful way. It combines theological study with leadership skills, helping you explore how religious thought shapes individuals, communities, and society, while preparing you for roles that involve guidance, service, and ethical decision-making.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you build a strong foundation in theology and philosophy. You explore how theological thinking developed, how faith and reason connect, and how ethical ideas are formed through units such as Introduction to Theology, Philosophical Foundations of Theology, Ethics, and The Mystery of Christ. This year focuses on helping you think critically and reflect deeply.

Year 2

The second year encourages you to connect theology with real-world issues and leadership contexts. You study topics such as Moral Theology, The Social Thought of the Church, Politics, Economics and Theology, and Biblical Figures and Accounts in the Qur’an, helping you understand faith in a wider cultural, social, and interfaith context.

Year 3

In your final year, you specialise and bring everything together through advanced theological study and an independent dissertation. Units such as Bioethics, Christology and Mariology, and Prophetic, Apocalyptic and Wisdom Literature help you engage with complex ethical and theological questions, while the dissertation builds your research, writing, and analytical skills.

Focus Areas

Theology and ethics, biblical studies, philosophy, moral and social theology, leadership in religious and community settings, interfaith understanding.

By graduation, you will be able to analyse theological and ethical issues, interpret religious texts thoughtfully, communicate complex ideas clearly, and apply leadership principles in community, educational, or faith-based environments.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme is aligned with the Malta Qualifications Framework Level 6, ensuring your degree is academically recognised and supports both employment and further study across Europe and beyond.

Reputation (Employability)

As Malta’s national university, the University of Malta offers theology programmes that are respected for their academic depth and reflective approach. Graduates are valued for their critical thinking, ethical awareness, and leadership potential in education, community work, and ministry-related fields.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Malta, this programme goes beyond reading and theory by encouraging you to actively engage with ideas, people, and real-world issues. Through small-group seminars, open discussions, research-led teaching, and public academic events, you learn how to apply theology and leadership concepts to everyday life, community work, and ethical decision-making. The Faculty of Theology creates an environment where questioning, reflection, and dialogue are central to your learning journey.

This practical and reflective experience is supported through:

  • Interactive seminars and discussion-based learning, where students actively debate ethical, theological, and leadership issues rather than passively listening to lectures.

  • Faculty-organised public lectures, seminars, and conferences, allowing you to engage with local and international scholars and explore contemporary issues in theology and leadership.

  • Research-supported learning, with opportunities to engage with ongoing theological research and academic publications through faculty initiatives.

  • Access to the University of Malta Library and digital academic resources, supporting essay writing, independent research, and your final-year dissertation.

  • Faculty-led academic and community engagement activities, helping you connect theology with education, ethics, social responsibility, and leadership contexts.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this Leadership and Theology degree go on to work in roles where thoughtful leadership, ethical judgement, and strong communication really matter. Many build careers as Community Leaders, Pastoral or Youth Workers, Religious Education Officers, or Ethics and Social Engagement Coordinators, supporting individuals and communities in meaningful, values-driven ways.

What helps students move confidently into these paths is the wider support and recognition around the degree:

  • Career guidance and employability support through the University of Malta’s Student Advisory Services, offering career planning, CV support, interview preparation, and guidance on next steps.

  • Positive graduate outcomes, with many University of Malta humanities graduates moving into employment or further study within a year of graduating, particularly in education, community work, and faith-based organisations.

  • Strong academic recognition, as the programme is aligned with Malta Qualifications Framework Level 6, giving the degree long-term value and recognition across Europe and internationally.

  • Transferable skills on graduation, including leadership, ethical reasoning, research, communication, and critical thinking — skills that are valued well beyond religious or academic settings.
