3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This degree is ideal for students who are curious about how machines learn, think, and make decisions, and want to turn that curiosity into real-world skills. You will study core computing concepts alongside Artificial Intelligence techniques, preparing you to design intelligent systems used across industries such as technology, finance, healthcare, and education.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
In your first year, you build a strong foundation in computing and Artificial Intelligence basics. You will learn how to program for AI applications, understand data and algorithms, and explore how knowledge is represented and processed by machines through units such as Programming for AI, Foundations of Data Science, and Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. This year focuses on helping you think logically and computationally.
Year 2
The second year moves into applied Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, where theory starts turning into practice. You will study Machine Learning: Introduction to Classification, Search and Optimisation and take part in a Group Assigned Practical Task, developing teamwork and problem-solving skills. Optional units such as Game AI or Artificial Intelligence in Education allow you to explore areas that match your interests.
Year 3
In your final year, you specialise and apply everything you have learned. You will complete a Final Year Project in Artificial Intelligence, working independently on a real AI-focused problem, while studying advanced topics such as Generative AI, Advanced Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Expert Systems and Fuzzy Logic, and Ethics and Artificial Intelligence. This year prepares you directly for industry roles or further study.
Focus Areas
Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Programming for AI, Data Science foundations, Computer Vision, Robotics, Knowledge Representation, Ethics in Artificial Intelligence.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates develop the ability to design and implement intelligent systems, apply AI techniques to real-world challenges, critically evaluate AI solutions, and understand the ethical responsibilities that come with building intelligent technologies.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
The programme is placed at Malta Qualifications Framework Level 6, meaning it meets recognised European academic standards and supports progression into employment or postgraduate study.
Reputation (Employability)
As Malta’s national university, the University of Malta offers computing and AI programmes that are widely recognised and aligned with modern industry needs. The degree is designed to equip graduates with skills that are in demand across international technology sectors.
At the University of Malta, learning Artificial Intelligence goes far beyond lectures and theory. From early in the degree, you will work in hands-on environments where you can test ideas, write code, and build intelligent systems using the same approaches used in real research and industry settings. The programme is closely linked to active AI research groups, so what you learn in class is regularly reinforced through practical work, group projects, and exposure to current AI applications.
This practical experience is delivered through a range of dedicated facilities and activities:
Specialised AI and ICT laboratories, including research labs in areas such as robotics, web intelligence, language technologies, and human-computer interaction, where students experiment with real AI systems and tools.
Group-based practical tasks, built into the curriculum, where you collaborate with classmates to solve problems, develop AI solutions, and present outcomes — mirroring how teams work in the tech industry.
Research-led learning, with opportunities to engage in departmental AI research areas and apply modern techniques in machine learning, data analysis, and intelligent systems.
Advanced computing environments and digital tools, provided through the University’s ICT and Artificial Intelligence facilities, supporting programming, data processing, and experimentation.
University learning resources, including access to the University of Malta Library and digital academic resources that support research, project work, and final-year dissertations.
Graduates of this Artificial Intelligence degree leave with practical, in-demand skills that open doors across the tech industry and beyond. Many move into roles such as Artificial Intelligence Developer, Machine Learning Engineer, Data Analyst, or Software Engineer, applying intelligent systems to real problems in business, research, healthcare, finance, and digital services.
What makes the transition from university to career smoother is the support and structure around you:
Career and employability support, through the University of Malta’s student and advisory services, helping you with career planning, CV preparation, interview skills, and access to graduate opportunities.
Strong employability outcomes, with University of Malta graduates finding work relatively quickly after completing their degrees, particularly in Information Technology and computing-related fields.
Industry exposure during study, through applied projects, research-led teaching, and university initiatives that help you gain experience and confidence before entering the job market.
Recognised academic standing, as the degree sits at Malta Qualifications Framework Level 6, giving it long-term value and recognition across Europe and internationally.
Further Academic Progression:
After completing this programme, students can continue their academic journey by progressing to postgraduate degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related computing fields, including Master’s programmes at the University of Malta or other international universities, as well as research-based pathways for those interested in innovation and academia.
