Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Computing Science)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Malta

Program Overview

This Computing Science degree is designed for students who enjoy problem-solving and want to understand how software, systems, and digital technologies really work. You will gain strong foundations in programming and computer science while gradually building the skills needed to develop reliable, secure, and efficient software used in the real world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you focus on building the core skills every computing student needs. You learn how computers work at a fundamental level, develop programming skills, and strengthen your logical and mathematical thinking through units such as Programming Principles in C, Computer Logic and Organisation, and Discrete Mathematics. This year is about setting a strong base and learning how to think like a computer scientist.

Year 2

The second year moves you into more applied and technical areas of computing. You study subjects such as Object-Oriented Programming, Computer Networks, and Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning, helping you understand how modern software systems are designed, connected, and optimised. You also start working with more complex systems and security concepts, preparing you for professional-level computing work.

Year 3

In your final year, you bring everything together through advanced study and a substantial Final Year Project in Computing Science. Core units like Software Engineering and Professional Issues in Computer Engineering and ICT prepare you for real workplace expectations, while electives such as Practical Machine Learning, Computer Vision, or Blockchain and Smart Contracts allow you to specialise in areas that interest you most.

Focus Areas

Software development, algorithms and data structures, computer networks, systems programming, machine learning, databases, cybersecurity, professional computing practice.

Learning Outcomes

By graduation, you will be able to design and build software systems, analyse complex computing problems, apply modern programming techniques, and work responsibly within professional and ethical standards.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This programme is aligned with the Malta Qualifications Framework Level 6, meaning it meets recognised European academic standards and supports both employment and postgraduate study.

Reputation (Employability)

As Malta’s national university, the University of Malta offers computing degrees that are well regarded by employers. Graduates are equipped with practical and theoretical skills that match the needs of today’s fast-moving technology and digital industries.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Malta, Computing Science is taught with a strong hands-on focus, so you are constantly applying what you learn rather than just studying theory. Throughout the programme, you work in dedicated computing environments, complete practical assignments, and build software systems that reflect real-world challenges. By the time you graduate, you will have spent years coding, testing, analysing, and presenting work in ways that closely mirror how professionals operate in the tech industry.

This practical learning experience is delivered through:

  • Dedicated computing and ICT laboratories, where you carry out programming, systems work, and software development using professional computing environments.

  • Regular practical assignments and group projects, built into core units, helping you develop teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills alongside technical ability.

  • A major Final Year Project, where you independently design and implement a substantial computing solution, bringing together your skills in programming, systems design, and analysis.

  • Access to the University of Malta Library and digital academic resources, supporting research, project development, and advanced technical learning.

  • Faculty-led events and ICT activities, giving you exposure to current computing topics and applied research within the Faculty of ICT.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this Computing Science degree leave with versatile, future-proof skills that open doors across the technology sector. Many move into roles such as Software Developer, Systems Analyst, Data Analyst, or Machine Learning Engineer, working in industries ranging from technology and finance to healthcare and digital services.

The University of Malta supports your transition from study to career in practical, meaningful ways:

  • Career guidance and employability support, through Student Advisory Services, helping you with career planning, CV writing, interview preparation, and access to graduate opportunities.

  • Strong employment outcomes, with Computing Science graduates typically securing roles in ICT and software-related fields soon after graduation.

  • Industry exposure during your studies, through applied coursework, project showcases, and faculty-led ICT events that help you understand real workplace expectations.

  • Recognised degree value, as the programme is aligned with Malta Qualifications Framework Level 6, giving your qualification long-term recognition across Europe and internationally.

  • Career-ready skills on graduation, including software development, problem-solving, teamwork, and professional practice, all valued by employers.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing this degree, students can continue their studies with Master’s programmes in Computing Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related fields, either at the University of Malta or at other universities worldwide, with options to progress into research-based pathways.
