Curriculum Structure:

Year 1

Build a strong foundation in both Biology and Physics through introductory theory, laboratory work, and scientific computing. You study core concepts such as Cellular and Biochemical Basis of Life, Diversity of Life, Introduction to Classical Mechanics and Waves, Mathematics for Physicists, Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory, Electricity and Magnetism and Optics, along with Python programming and Environmental Chemistry for Scientists.

Year 2

Develop deeper scientific knowledge by exploring advanced biological systems and intermediate physics. Biology modules include Ecology and Ethology, Biochemical Strategies of Life, Plant Biology, Animal Form and Function, and Evolutionary Biology. Physics modules cover Classical and Relativistic Mechanics, Analytical Methods for Physicists, Electromagnetism, Quantum Mechanics, Physical Optics, and Experimental Physics.

Year 3

Advance your expertise through specialised coursework, laboratory practice, and interdisciplinary studies. Biology topics include Genetics and Developmental Biology, Biotechnology, Parasitology, Field Biology, Topics in Microbiology, and Science, Society and Ethics. Physics studies include Atomic Physics, Statistical Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Solid State Physics, Foundations of Physical Cosmology, and Advanced Experimental Physics.

Year 4

Complete an Honours specialisation by choosing one discipline as your major (40 ECTS, including an 18-ECTS research dissertation/project) and the other as your secondary area (20 ECTS). Biology students undertake a Final Year Project, Professional and Technical Skills for Scientists, and advanced electives such as Biotechnology, Conservation Genetics, Environmental Biology, or Industrial Biology. Physics students complete a Physics Project, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Seminar, Philosophy of Science, and choose elective streams in Space Sciences, Electromagnetics, or Quantum Physics.
