It involves a methodical and critical questioning of reality and of human beings, existence and perception, of linguistic and artistic expression, of the fundamentals of ethics, and of the role of politics. From the origins of Western civilisation, philosophy has addressed the universal problems of human existence through free thought, rational argument and public debate. As such, philosophical studies have always been present in our society and have a decisive role in Western traditions and thought.
