Program Overview

Karolinska Institutet’s Study Programme in Physiotherapy is a 3-year, 180-credit professional degree for students interested in movement, rehabilitation, health promotion and helping people improve or regain physical function. Students combine medical science with evidence-based physiotherapy, practical clinical skills and person-centred care, although it is important to note that the programme is taught in Swedish.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Understanding the Body, Movement and Physiotherapy
The first year builds a strong scientific foundation through courses including Health, Science and Profession in Physiotherapy, Anatomy and Physiology. Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Practical learning is built directly into KI’s Physiotherapy programme, allowing students to move from studying the body and movement to assessing and working with patients in real healthcare environments. Clinical learning takes place through VIL (practice-integrated learning) and VFU (clinical placement education), with placements in Region Stockholm as well as municipal and private healthcare settings in Stockholm County.

Students also learn through laboratory work, field studies, group-based learning, digital activities and interprofessional healthcare training, giving them several opportunities to apply theory before graduation:

Clinical placements: The new curriculum includes 10.5 credits of inpatient VFU, 16.5 credits in habilitation and rehabilitation, 3 credits in interprofessional teamwork and 10.5 credits in primary care.
Real healthcare environments: Physiotherapy VFU placements are organised within Region Stockholm, municipal services and private healthcare providers in Stockholm County.
