Bachelor in Musicology

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Basel

Program Overview

Musicology deals with the history of music from the beginnings of written recordings in the 9th century through classical modernism to rock and pop. In addition to the historical perspective, the bachelor students are introduced to the basics of music theory, music analysis and aesthetics of music. The study serves the understanding and interpretation of music in the widest sense. It conveys insights into the different presuppositions and manifestations of music, their interrelations with other arts and their role in society. The subject of the investigation is everything that comes under the term music, in particular written text and music sources, pictures, musical instruments and sound recordings. Basel not only offers its students sound musical education, but also enables them to collaborate on practice-oriented, mediating projects such as: For example, the conception of exhibitions or the production of program booklets and CD booklets.
