Program Overview

Ethnology is the comprehensive science of man as a social being, which is why the concept of social anthropology in Germany more and more naturalized. The goal is to understand human behavior in different societies and to explain it in its natural, social, political, economic and cultural contexts. Ethnologists deal with rural as well as urban spaces. They explore everyday practice, social and religious movements, jurisdiction, conflicts, and the activities of state and international organizations, and explore how local cultures are embedded in regional, national, and global spaces. Particularly characteristic of ethnographic research is the comparative perspective and the methods of participation and observation. The field research, which often took a year or more, was and is constitutive for ethnology as a scientific discipline. At the Bachelor level, students deal with basic theories and methods as well as specific topics and fields of research, with a regional focus on Africa and Oceania.
