Bachelor of Fine Arts

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Sharjah

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fine Arts at University of Sharjah is a four-year full-time undergraduate degree that develops students’ creative, conceptual, and technical abilities across traditional and contemporary art media while integrating critical art theory and cultural context. It suits aspiring professional artists, visual communicators, cultural practitioners, and creative thinkers who want to pursue careers in studio art, exhibitions, galleries, museums, and creative industries through experiential learning and professional development.

Curriculum structure

Year 1 – Foundations of Artistic Practice

In the first year, students build a solid base with introductory courses such as Introduction to Fine Arts, Drawing for Fine Arts, and Photography Studio I, where they explore basic visual vocabulary, composition, and technical handling of core media. Early modules like Arts and Design Foundation and Color Theory ground students in design principles, enabling them to experiment confidently in both analogue and digital mediums. This foundational stage emphasises observation, visual expression, and beginning technical mastery.

Year 2 – Expansion into Diverse Media

The second year expands students’ skill sets with medium-specific studio courses such as Photography Studio II, Printmaking Studio I, and Painting Studio I, which develop technical, conceptual, and expressive capacities in photography, printmaking, and painting. Through Fine Arts Videography, learners are also introduced to video as a creative medium, enriching their ability to work across both still and moving images. These units encourage experimentation, integration of technique with idea generation, and contextual understanding as students begin to form individual artistic voices.

Year 3 – Deepening Creative Exploration

In the third year, students progress to more advanced studio work such as Photography Studio III, Printmaking Studio II/III, Painting Studio II/III, and Sculpture Studio II/III, exploring complex conceptual projects and sophisticated material approaches. Courses like Theories in Contemporary Art and Fine Arts Seminar I introduce critical discourse, helping students situate their practice within global and regional art contexts, while Studio Research Project fosters independent research aligned with personal interests. This phase blends technical fluency with thoughtful contextual engagement.

Year 4 – Professional Practice and Capstone

In the final year, students synthesise their learning through the Fine Arts Graduation Project I & II, where they plan, research, and complete a substantial body of individual creative work, often preparing for public exhibition or professional presentation. Professional Practice in Fine Arts enhances career readiness by focusing on exhibition planning, portfolio development, and professional skills, while Internship in Fine Arts provides real-world exposure in galleries, studios, or cultural institutions. Optional electives such as Video Installation and Writing about Art allow further specialisation and integration of interdisciplinary practice.
