Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

American University of Ras Al Khaimah

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah provides students with a rigorous science education that combines biology, chemistry and technological tools to address real-world challenges in healthcare, agriculture, forensics and environmental science. It suits students with strong interests in biological systems, laboratory investigation and scientific problem-solving who want careers in research, pharmaceuticals, clinical diagnostics, food and environmental biotechnology or graduate study.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students build a solid foundation in the life sciences with units such as University Biology I & Lab, University Biology II & Lab, General Chemistry, and Calculus. These courses introduce the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, genetics basics and the quantitative reasoning essential for later biotechnology coursework, while laboratory components develop basic experimental skills. Early exposure to Microbiology I also prepares learners for understanding microorganisms and their roles in health and industry.

Year 2:
The second year deepens core scientific knowledge with subjects such as General Microbiology & Lab, Biochemistry I & Lab, and General Genetics & Lab. Students explore microbial biology, biochemical pathways and inheritance patterns, gaining hands-on experience in culturing, staining and molecular analysis techniques that are central to biotechnological research and diagnostics. Courses like Ecology also broaden biological context and systems thinking.

Year 3:
In the third year, students engage with advanced topics such as Applied and Industrial Microbiology & Lab, Biochemistry II, Microbial Genetics, and Biophysics & Lab, where they learn how microbes contribute to biotechnology applications, understand complex metabolic systems, and apply physical principles to biological systems. These modules encourage students to integrate multidisciplinary insights and refine their practical laboratory competencies for sophisticated research.

Year 4:
The final year focuses on specialised and integrative studies, with elective and advanced coursework such as Advanced Genomics or Biotechnology Electives (e.g., specialised concentrations in Medical Biotechnology, Cell and Molecular Biotechnology or Forensic Biology), coupled with a significant Research Project/Capstone that requires independent investigation and scientific communication. This stage synthesises students’ cumulative expertise and prepares them for professional roles or postgraduate study.
