BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Heriot Watt University Dubai

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and Energy Engineering and Energy Engineering at Heriot-Watt University Dubai combines traditional mechanical engineering principles with specialised study in energy systems, sustainability and environmental impact to prepare students for modern engineering challenges. It suits students who enjoy mathematics and physics and want to work on energy-efficient design, renewable systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering solutions that address global energy needs.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students build a strong foundation with modules such as Mechanics, Fields and Forces, Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists 1 & 2, Introduction to Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Introduction to Mechanical Engineering. These courses develop analytical mathematics, basic mechanics and electrical understanding, while Engineering in Context helps students grasp how engineering fits into professional and societal settings.

Year 2:
The second year introduces core engineering science and systems with Design and Manufacture 2, Fluid Mechanics A, Mechanics of Materials A, Thermodynamics A, Dynamics, and Electrical Power and Machines. Students learn how materials behave under load, how fluids and energy work in mechanical systems, and how thermodynamic principles govern energy processes, supported by analytical and design work.

Year 3:
In year three, modules like Sustainable Development and Engineering Management, Computational Fluid Dynamics and Incompressible Fluids, Design and Manufacture 3 & 4, Thermodynamics B, Vibration Analysis & Control Engineering and Energy Studies deepen both mechanical and energy engineering understanding. Students explore sustainable design, advanced fluid behaviour, system control and energy concepts, bridging mechanical fundamentals with energy applications in real-world contexts.

Year 4:
The final year focuses on professional integration with Industrial Design and Manufacture, an Individual Engineering Project, Heat Exchangers and Heat Transfer, Introduction to Petroleum Engineering, Advanced Thermodynamic Applications, and optional topics such as Compressible Fluid Dynamics or Robotic Mechanical Systems. This stage requires students to synthesise previous learning, undertake independent research or design work, and consider advanced energy systems and industry approaches.

Focus areas (in a string):
Mechanical design; energy systems; fluid mechanics; thermodynamics; materials and manufacturing; computational analysis; control engineering; sustainable engineering solutions.

Learning outcomes (in a string):
Apply core mathematics and physics to mechanical and energy problems; analyse thermofluid systems; integrate sustainable design principles; use computational tools; complete independent engineering projects; communicate professional solutions.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students in the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering program at Heriot-Watt University gain practical skills through a curriculum built around hands-on laboratory work, project-based design challenges, and direct industry engagement. They apply theoretical knowledge in modern engineering facilities that are informed by the university's world-leading research in mechanical, process, and energy engineering.

This focus on practical, industry-relevant training is delivered through several key components:

  • Hands-on Projects and Laboratories: The program emphasizes hands on and practical work throughout, with dedicated modules in Design and Manufacture that span multiple years and include project-based learning.

  • Industrial Visits and Placement: Students build professional networks through industrial visits and have the option to complete an industrial placement year. Successful completion of this placement results in the award of a Diploma in Industrial Training (DIT).

  • Major Final Year Projects: In the fourth year, students undertake a substantial Mechanical Engineering Individual Project and the Industrial Design and Manufacture module, which includes working on an industrial project.

  • Specialist Software Training: The curriculum includes the study of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), indicating the use of advanced simulation software for engineering analysis.
