Heriot Watt University in Dubai is a branch campus of Heriot-Watt University in UK. It is the first overseas university to have opened its campus in Dubai Academic City.  The university was established in 2005. Other than Dubai, Heriot- Watt also has campuses in UK and Malaysia. Construction of Heriot-Watt University's purpose-built campus in Dubai International Academic City began in 2010. This state of the art campus officially opened on 3 November 2011, increasing the capacity of Heriot-Watt Dubai Campus to 4,500 students.

The university offers more than 55 programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, postgraduate (research) and foundation level. It comprises of 6 schools: School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society; School of Engineering and Physical Sciences; School of Social Sciences; School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences; School of Textiles & Design and Edinburgh Business School.

Students from over 110 countries are enrolled at the Heriot-Watt University, Dubai. The university has its main intake in September but for some programs it has an additional intake in January. In certain cases it is possible for the undergraduate students to transfer to UK.

It is specifically designed as a foundation programme that will help students to bridge the gap between their school qualifications and the demands of a university degree. Students who complete the programme successfully will be able to progress directly into the first year of their chosen degree programme. The programme will help students to develop their subject knowledge whilst providing a firm foundation in IT, research and writing skills, academic English, and assessment and examination techniques.

The Advanced DEP is aimed at students who are academically stronger than those students who have entered the standard DEP. The programme will help students to develop their subject knowledge whilst providing a firm foundation in IT, research and writing skills, academic English, and assessment and examination techniques. Students who complete the programme successfully will be able to progress directly into the first year of their chosen degree programme in January. Thereafter, they will complete the first year of their degree over two semesters and join the second year of their degree in September of that year.
