BSc Physiotherapy

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Sharjah

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (B.Sc. PT) at University of Sharjah is a four-year healthcare degree that trains students in rehabilitation science and therapeutic practice to restore function and prevent disability arising from disease, injury, or trauma. It suits students passionate about patient care, physical recovery, movement science, and careers in clinical or community health settings.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students build foundations with modules such as Introduction to Radiology, Anatomy (1), Therapeutic Modalities, Introduction to Physiotherapy, and Biomechanics and Kinesiology (1) to learn core body systems, basic clinical techniques, and health science fundamentals. These courses develop essential understanding of human structure and introductory therapeutic tools necessary for later clinical work.

Year 2

The second year emphasizes practical clinical knowledge with modules like Physiotherapy for Respiratory and Cardiovascular Conditions, Assessment in Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Physiotherapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions (1) and Clinical Practice for Musculoskeletal & Medical/Surgical Conditions, integrating hands-on clinical exposure with theory. Students refine evaluation and intervention skills for common health problems across body systems.

Year 3

In the third year, students broaden professional competence via modules such as Physiotherapy for Neurological Conditions, Physiotherapy for Pediatrics, Physiotherapy for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Physiotherapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions (2), and Orthotics and Prosthetics, combining advanced clinical knowledge with expanded patient care skills. Clinical placements and practice deepen real-world therapeutic experience.

Year 4

The final year consolidates expertise with advanced topics like Physiotherapy for Geriatrics, Integrated Physiotherapy Clinical Practice, Selected Topics in Physiotherapy, and a Research Project, allowing students to synthesise learning into evidence-based care, professional decision-making, and research competence before entering the workforce.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This clinical training is structured through the following specific components:

  • Specialized Physiotherapy Laboratories: Students train in labs such as the Clinical Skills and Simulation Lab, Musculoskeletal Assessment & Rehabilitation Lab, Neurological Rehabilitation Lab, Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Lab, and Hydrotherapy Pool.

  • Clinical Therapeutic Equipment: Labs are equipped with modern tools including electrotherapy units (TENS, ultrasound, laser), traction tables, continuous passive motion (CPM) machines, balance and proprioception training systems (Biodex, Balance Master), gait analysis equipment, and strength training apparatus.

  • Mandatory Clinical Placements (Internships): Students complete multiple, full-time clinical placements across different healthcare settings. These typically include rotations in public and private hospitals, orthopedic and sports clinics, neurological rehabilitation centers, pediatric units, and cardiorespiratory wards under the supervision of licensed physiotherapists.

  • Simulation-Based Learning: The Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory uses high-fidelity patient manikins and standardized patients to practice assessment, manual therapy techniques, and emergency response in a controlled environment before working with real patients.

  • Interprofessional Education (IPE): The curriculum includes IPE activities where physiotherapy students collaborate with medical, nursing, and pharmacy students on simulated patient cases to develop team-based care skills.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of University of Sharjah's Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy complete a 138-credit-hour program focused on rehabilitation across all ages, equipping them to restore function and prevent disability from disease, trauma, or injury in diverse healthcare settings.

Progression & Future Opportunities: The curriculum integrates theory, labs, and extensive clinical practice:

  • Progressive clinical placements build skills in musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory/cardiovascular, pediatric, obstetric/gynecological, geriatric, and community-based physiotherapy, totaling 90 clinical hours.

  • Specialized courses like therapeutic modalities, biomechanics, orthotics/prosthetics, and exercise physiology prepare students for hands-on interventions in hospitals, clinics, rehab centers, sports facilities, and communities.

  • Research project (0505463) and selected topics foster evidence-based practice and professional development.

  • Graduates enter roles in outpatient/inpatient facilities, schools, industrial workplaces, or fitness centers in UAE/abroad, with strong employability in rehabilitation and sports medicine.

  • University career services provide personalized support for job placement and leadership roles.

Further Academic Progression: The program prepares students for MSc/PhD in physiotherapy or related fields, leveraging clinical expertise and research training for advanced clinical practice, academia, or specialized certifications.
