BSc Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

American University of Sharjah

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biology at American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a four-year undergraduate program that introduces students to diverse disciplines within life sciences — from genetics and cell biology to ecology and conservation — through classroom, laboratory, field, and research experiences. It suits students passionate about understanding living systems and pursuing careers or further study in medicine, biotechnology, environmental science, wildlife management, or scientific research.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students begin with foundational biological science courses that explore the diversity and mechanisms of life, such as Genetics & Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Microbiology, supported by introductory units in Anatomy & Physiology that deepen understanding of organismal function. These modules introduce core concepts like gene expression, cellular processes, and microbial roles in health and environment, while practical labs develop essential scientific techniques. Early study also includes general education requirements that build academic writing and critical thinking, forming a strong scientific foundation.

Year 2:
In the second year, learners delve into specialised subjects such as Physiology, Neuroscience, and Immunology, which examine how complex systems maintain function and respond to disease, along with Marine Biology to understand aquatic ecosystems. Students also explore Biological Conservation and Management, applying ecological principles to real-world problems like species protection and habitat sustainability. This year encourages students to connect molecular and organismal perspectives with larger biological and environmental issues through field work and lab study.

Year 3:
The third year advances into interdisciplinary areas like Pharmacology and Disease Prevention, emphasising how biological understanding underpins human health, drugs, and public health strategies. Coursework in Behavioural Biology and Ecology further expands students’ grasp of organism interactions and environmental dynamics, while laboratory and research projects allow hands-on engagement with experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. At this stage, students may begin elective choices or tracks that align with career goals (e.g., pre-medical, research, conservation).

Year 4:
In the final year, students focus on synthesis and application through senior research projects or Independent Study, where they integrate prior learning to investigate a chosen biological topic and present findings professionally. Advanced electives across molecular, cellular, and ecological areas provide opportunities to specialise — for example in Disease Ecology or Advanced Genetics — and preparations for careers or graduate study culminate in capstone experiences. This year is designed to ensure students are ready for professional work, scientific research, or further academic pursuits in biological sciences.

Focus areas (in a string):
Genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, anatomy and physiology, neuroscience, immunology, pharmacology, disease prevention, marine biology, ecology, conservation and management.

Learning outcomes (in a string):
Demonstrate understanding of life sciences principles; apply laboratory techniques and analytical reasoning; carry out biological research and data interpretation; communicate scientific findings effectively; evaluate biological threats and conservation issues; and use interdisciplinary approaches to address complex biological problems.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
AUS is accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education’s Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) and delivers the B.Sc. Biology within its College of Arts and Sciences, ensuring that the program meets national academic quality standards aligned with international scientific education practices.

Reputation (employability rankings):
The American University of Sharjah appears in global university listings (e.g., QS World University Rankings) and is recognised for its strong science programs, with AUS biology graduates positioned for careers in health, research, conservation, biotechnology, and related sectors or advanced degrees.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This hands-on learning is delivered through specific resources and program structures:

  • Core Biological Laboratories: Students train in specialized labs such as the Cell & Molecular Biology Laboratory, Microbiology & Immunology Laboratory, Genetics and Genomics Laboratory, Plant Physiology Laboratory, and Ecology & Environmental Biology Laboratory.

  • Advanced Research Facilities: Access is provided to core university facilities like the Central Biotechnology Laboratory, Advanced Imaging and Microscopy Facility, and DNA Sequencing Facility for student research projects.

  • Mandatory Fieldwork and Trips: The curriculum includes compulsory field trips to local ecosystems including desert wadis, mangrove forests (e.g., Eastern Mangroves), coastal regions, and mountain (Hajar) habitats. The UAEU Field Station is used for extended ecological research.

  • Industry-Standard Instruments and Software: Labs are equipped with instruments like PCR machines, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and microscopes. Students use bioinformatics software (e.g., for DNA sequence analysis), statistical packages (SPSS, R), and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for ecological mapping.

  • Capstone Senior Research Project: A major senior research project requires students to conduct original, independent investigation in a chosen biological sub-discipline, often utilizing the advanced research facilities.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of American University of Sharjah's Bachelor of Science in Biology program pursue careers in medicine, medical labs, public health, conservation, and biotechnology, supported by advanced labs and field training. They gain expertise in genetics, microbiology, ecology, and physiology for diverse scientific roles. Typical job roles include medical lab technologist, wildlife biologist, pharmaceutical researcher, and science educator.

Progression & Future Opportunities:

  • Career Services and Biology Club offer internships, research projects, and industry networking.

  • High employability with alumni at AstraZeneca, Baxter; UAE biology roles earn AED 12,000–25,000 monthly.

  • Partnerships with healthcare/biotech firms for experiential learning; accreditation ensures global standards; outcomes emphasize lab skills, ethics, and innovation.

Further Academic Progression: Pursue MSc/PhD in biosciences or medicine at AUS or global institutions, leveraging senior projects for research leadership
