BSc In Cell And Molecular Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Khalifa University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology at Khalifa University (KU) is a four-year undergraduate degree that provides students with in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of cellular processes, molecular mechanisms, genetics, and life sciences research. It suits aspiring scientists, researchers, and those preparing for careers in biotechnology, medicine, laboratory science, or graduate study, blending lab-intensive training with critical thinking and scientific communication skills.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in life sciences with units such as General Biology I & II, where they explore cell structure, genetics, metabolism, and the diversity of life. Complemented by essential science courses like General Chemistry and Introduction to Analytical Chemistry, these introductory modules establish critical understanding of chemical and biological principles that underpin all advanced biology. General Education courses further strengthen skills in communication, critical reasoning, and quantitative methods essential for scientific inquiry.

Year 2:
The second year deepens scientific competence with courses like Biochemistry I, which explores biomolecular structure and function, and Molecular Cell Biology (BMED 341), which immerses students in molecular regulation and cellular systems. Molecular Genetics, Technologies and Tools (BMED 342) familiarises learners with genetic techniques and cutting-edge methods used in modern laboratory research. This stage bridges basic biological understanding with techniques and applications in molecular sciences, fostering analytical reasoning and practical lab skills.

Year 3:
In year three, learners engage with more specialised content such as Molecular Biology, where topics may include cell signalling, genetic engineering, RNA biology, and emerging technologies, including applications of synthetic biology and health-related research. Alongside, advanced laboratory-focused modules like Methods in Cell and Molecular Biology provide intensive hands-on experience with modern experimental techniques and data analysis. Students also begin choosing elective topics that further align with their scientific interests and career goals.

Year 4:
The final year emphasises synthesis and application through a Senior Research Project, where students undertake independent or mentored research that integrates knowledge across cell and molecular biology. Additional elective modules and research-oriented units allow students to specialise in areas such as advanced genetics, cellular regulation, or applied biotechnology, preparing graduates for professional roles or further academic study. Throughout this year, students refine scientific communication, problem-solving, and ethical research practices that define professional scientists.

Focus areas (in a string):

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This hands-on learning is delivered through specific resources and program structures:

  • Core Biological Laboratories: Students train in specialized labs such as the Cell & Molecular Biology Laboratory, Microbiology & Immunology Laboratory, Genetics and Genomics Laboratory, Plant Physiology Laboratory, and Ecology & Environmental Biology Laboratory.

  • Advanced Research Facilities: Access is provided to core university facilities like the Central Biotechnology Laboratory, Advanced Imaging and Microscopy Facility, and DNA Sequencing Facility for student research projects.

  • Mandatory Fieldwork and Trips: The curriculum includes compulsory field trips to local ecosystems including desert wadis, mangrove forests (e.g., Eastern Mangroves), coastal regions, and mountain (Hajar) habitats. The UAEU Field Station is used for extended ecological research.

  • Industry-Standard Instruments and Software: Labs are equipped with instruments like PCR machines, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and microscopes. Students use bioinformatics software (e.g., for DNA sequence analysis), statistical packages (SPSS, R), and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for ecological mapping.

  • Capstone Senior Research Project: A major senior research project requires students to conduct original, independent investigation in a chosen biological sub-discipline, often utilizing the advanced research facilities.
