Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

United Arab Emirates University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at United Arab Emirates University gives students a strong foundation across the major branches of chemistry — analytical, organic, inorganic, physical and biochemistry — while also developing practical laboratory and communication skills. It suits students aspiring to careers in chemical research, industry, pharmaceuticals, education, or further graduate study in scientific disciplines.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students build core scientific foundations with General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II, alongside General Chemistry Lab, while supporting knowledge through Calculus I & II, General Physics I & II, and introductory courses that strengthen problem-solving and scientific reasoning.

Year 2

The second year focuses on essential chemistry disciplines such as Organic Chemistry I & II, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry I, and Physical Chemistry I, supported by Organic Chemistry Lab I & II. Students also take Writing for Research and sustainability electives to enhance scientific communication and interdisciplinary awareness.

Year 3

In the third year, advanced specialised courses like Instrumental Analysis I, Physical Chemistry II, Chemistry of Elements, and Biochemistry I deepen analytical and conceptual skills. Opportunities for gen ed electives and innovation-focused courses broaden perspectives and prepare students for independent scientific work.

Year 4

The final year culminates in professional experience and research with a Research Project and a mandatory Internship, alongside Inorganic Chemistry II and Practical Inorganic Chemistry labs. Elective specialisation courses such as Environmental Chemistry or Electrochemistry allow students to tailor their expertise.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This applied learning is delivered through specific, advanced resources and structured experiences:

  • Specialized Chemistry Laboratories: Students perform experiments in dedicated teaching labs for Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Biochemistry. Each lab is equipped with modern apparatus relevant to its sub-discipline.

  • Advanced Instrumentation and Core Facilities: Students gain hands-on experience with research-grade instruments in the Central Analytical Laboratory (CAL), including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers, Mass Spectrometers (MS), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, and Atomic Absorption/Atomic Emission spectrometers.

  • Industry-Standard Software: Students are trained in essential chemistry software for data analysis and molecular modeling, such as ChemDraw for chemical structure drawing, specialized spectral analysis software, and computational chemistry packages.

  • Capstone Undergraduate Research Project: A major senior research project is required, where students conduct original, independent research under faculty supervision, often utilizing the advanced instrumentation of the CAL or other research centers.

  • Mandatory Industrial Training (Internship): Students complete a professional training internship with partners in the UAE's chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, environmental testing, food technology, or materials science industries.

  • Field Trips and Site Visits: The curriculum may include educational visits to local industrial plants (e.g., refineries, water desalination facilities, pharmaceutical companies) to observe applied chemistry processes.

  • Research Institutes and Centers: Students can engage in cutting-edge research through UAEU's Center for Advanced Materials Research, the Petroleum Institute, or the Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, depending on their interest.

  • Safety-Centric Training: All practical work is conducted with a strong emphasis on chemical hygiene, laboratory safety protocols, and responsible waste disposal.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of UAEU's Bachelor of Science in Chemistry gain comprehensive expertise across analytical, organic, inorganic, physical, and biochemistry, complemented by IT skills, lab proficiency, and research experience through internships and final-year projects. This prepares them exceptionally for chemical, pharmaceutical, and industrial careers or graduate studies. Typical job roles include analytical chemist, quality control specialist, research chemist, and pharmaceutical technician in UAE industries.

Progression & Future Opportunities: The program delivers strong career readiness:

  • Career Development Center offers internships (CHEM419: 8-week placement), job fairs, CV workshops, and employer networking.

  • High employability in UAE chemical/pharma sectors; entry salaries AED 80k–140k annually.

  • Partnerships with regional industries provide workplace training and research opportunities.

  • Dual accreditation by Canadian Society of Chemistry and Royal Society of Chemistry ensures global long-term recognition.

  • Outcomes: mastery of lab techniques, critical problem-solving, and professional communication via 120 CH curriculum.

Further Academic Progression: Graduates can pursue UAEU's MSc Chemistry (accelerated BS-MS option with double-counted courses like CHEM526) or PhD programs, leveraging research project experience
