Program Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Media and Communications is a four-year undergraduate degree that prepares students for careers in the rapidly evolving digital media, communication, branding, and content creation industries, blending creative practice with communication theory and strategic media skills. It suits students who want to create, manage, and analyse digital content, understand communication theories in the digital age, and develop integrated communication strategies across platforms.


Curriculum structure

Year 1 – Foundations:
In the first year, students build core competencies with introductory units such as Introduction to Storytelling, Basics of Camera Techniques, and Understanding Media, where they learn how narratives, visual media, and communication systems function across digital platforms. General education courses like English for Academic Writing and Media Literacy support critical thinking and academic communication skills.

Year 2 – Applied Production & Communication:
The second year advances practical skills with subjects like Radio Programming and Production, Media Ethics, Laws, and Regulations, Digital Photography, Graphic Design, and Public Relations and Corporate Communication, where learners produce multimedia content and apply communication strategies to creative projects.

Year 3 – Digital Strategy & Engagement:
In the third year, students deepen their expertise with units such as Social Media and Content Creation, Digital Marketing, Communication for Development, Emerging Media Platforms and Audiences, and Global Media and Culture, promoting strategic thinking and audience engagement in digital environments. An Internship in Digital Media provides real-world experience.

Year 4 – Advanced Practice & Capstone:
The final year culminates in advanced practice courses such as Advertising & Corporate Film Production, major electives tailored to students’ interests, and a Graduation Project, enabling them to synthesise technical, creative, and strategic media skills into polished professional work.

    • On-Campus Media Production Facilities: The program is centered around the UAEU Media Center, which includes a professional Television Studio, a Radio Broadcasting Studio, a digital Newsroom, and multimedia Editing Suites.

    • Industry-Standard Equipment and Software: Students train with professional-grade video cameras, audio recorders, and lighting kits. They use industry-standard software such as the Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, Audition, Photoshop) for editing and design, and broadcast automation systems in the radio and TV studios.

    • Mandatory Professional Internship: Students must complete a full-time, for-credit internship (often referred to as "Practical Training") at a media organization. Typical hosts include local and national newspapers, TV and radio stations, public relations firms, advertising agencies, and digital media companies in the UAE.

    • Capstone Media Project: In their final year, students undertake a significant senior project or thesis that involves producing a substantial piece of media work, such as a documentary, a full magazine issue, or a strategic communication campaign, from conception to execution.

    • Student Media Outlets: Students gain real experience by contributing to and managing student-run media, such as the university newspaper, radio station broadcasts, and online media channels.
