Architecture BSc

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Cardiff University

Program Overview

The BSc Architecture at Cardiff University (Welsh School of Architecture) combines design creativity with technical and ethical thinking, preparing you to tackle real-world architectural challenges. It’s ideal for students who want a strong foundation in architecture and plan to progress to professional qualification (via a postgraduate MArch) or work in design-led, community-focused architecture.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year introduces you to architecture through the Explorations in Architectural Design module, where you learn to respond creatively to briefs and understand form, function, and context. You also take Principles of Architectural Technology to grasp basic construction systems, and Chronologies of Architecture to explore architecture’s history and theory. Alongside these, Architect & Society helps you reflect on the ethical role of architecture in communities, and Design Foundations builds your core design and research skills.

Year 2

In your second year, design becomes more integrated: Design in Context is a studio-based module where you respond to more complex sites and client-type challenges. Architectural Technology in Context deepens your technical understanding of building assemblies. Through Architecture in Context and Architecture & Professional Contexts, you explore how architecture operates in economic, social, and professional settings. Conceptualising Design is a long-form design project that helps you develop a personal approach to architectural problem-solving.

Year 3

In the final year, you choose a Thematic Studio (Urbanism, Making, Environment, Adaptation, or Personhood & Place) that aligns with your interests — this becomes the main focus of your design work. Core modules include Design Manifesto, where you articulate your design philosophy; Integrating Technology, which lets you weave in technical building systems; Theories & Thinkers, exploring architectural ideas; and Architectural Practice & Economic Context, where you examine the business and ethics of the profession. Design Integration brings it all together in a major studio project that demonstrates how well you can balance creativity, technical knowledge, and professional awareness.

Focus Areas

Design creativity; building technology; architecture history/theory; sustainability; social and community-minded architecture; professional ethics and practice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to develop design proposals that balance aesthetic, structural, and environmental considerations, communicate your ideas in multiple media, understand the ethical and social responsibilities of architecture, and work confidently in preparation for professional or further academic progression.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The BSc is accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB), meaning it meets the educational requirements for Part 1 of the UK architect-qualification route.

Reputation (Employability & Rankings)

Cardiff’s Welsh School of Architecture is highly respected, with a design-led curriculum, strong sustainability focus, and a commitment to real-world engagement. Graduates commonly move on to the MArch for full professional training, or take roles in architecture, urban design, research, or other design-driven fields — benefiting from the school’s strong industry links and emphasis on ethical, inclusive architecture.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The BSc Architecture programme at Cardiff University is designed to give you practical design experience from day one. You spend a lot of time in design studios, working on projects that combine creativity with technical understanding. Early in the course, you focus on learning key architectural drawing, modelling, and digital design skills, while exploring construction, materials, and environmental performance. Field trips, site visits, and real-world case studies allow you to see how architectural theory applies to actual buildings and urban contexts.

The course balances practical design, technical knowledge, and research skills. As you progress, your studio projects increase in complexity, incorporating sustainable design, accessibility, and structural integration. You also work on group projects that simulate professional practice, gaining experience in collaboration, communication, and design problem-solving. Your final-year project is a major self-directed design project, bringing together all your knowledge to deliver a fully developed architectural proposal.
