Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies BSc

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University College London

Program Overview

The Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) BSc is a pioneering degree that combines the study of architecture with a wide range of disciplines such as anthropology, economics, psychology, art history, and more. This flexibility allows students to tailor their studies around personal interests, strengths, and career aspirations—both within the built environment and beyond.

Course Focus

Year 1

Students take 120 credits, with at least 75 from The Bartlett and the rest as electives from across UCL. Core modules include Architectural Research I, which builds analytical and writing skills, and Design and Creative Practice 1, which introduces drawing, modelling, and digital methods. Electives allow exploration of other fields such as history, geography, or languages. The year focuses on establishing a foundation in architectural thinking while encouraging interdisciplinary study.

Year 2

The second year also requires 120 credits, with a minimum of 75 from The Bartlett. Core modules continue with Architectural Research II and Design and Creative Practice 2, advancing theoretical knowledge and creative experimentation. Students also take Greening Cities, exploring sustainability, and Computing for Design and Creative Practice, developing digital and computational design skills. Electives offer flexibility to connect architecture with subjects like psychology, anthropology, or philosophy. This year deepens critical, creative, and interdisciplinary learning.

Year 3

In the final year, students complete 120 credits, including at least 60 from The Bartlett. They must take either Architectural Research III or Design and Creative Practice 3, though most choose both to develop substantial independent research and advanced design work. The remaining credits are electives, with popular choices including archaeology, economics, history of art, and management. The year emphasizes independence, originality, and integration of architectural and interdisciplinary perspectives, preparing students for postgraduate study or varied career paths.
