4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) BSc with Year Abroad is a unique and pioneering four-year degree that combines the study of architecture with other disciplines such as anthropology, economics, psychology, art history, and more. The course enables students to tailor their studies to match their personal interests, strengths, and career aspirations, both within the built environment and beyond.
Year 1
Students take 120 credits, with at least 75 from The Bartlett and the rest as electives from across UCL. Core modules include Architectural Research I, which builds analytical and writing skills, and Design and Creative Practice 1, which introduces drawing, modelling, and digital methods. Electives allow exploration of other fields such as history, geography, or languages. The year focuses on establishing a foundation in architectural thinking while encouraging interdisciplinary study.
Year 2
The second year also requires 120 credits, with a minimum of 75 from The Bartlett. Core modules continue with Architectural Research II and Design and Creative Practice 2, advancing theoretical knowledge and creative experimentation. Students also take Greening Cities, exploring sustainability, and Computing for Design and Creative Practice, developing digital and computational design skills. Electives offer flexibility to connect architecture with subjects like psychology, anthropology, or philosophy. This year deepens critical, creative, and interdisciplinary learning.
Year 3 – Year Abroad
Students who choose the Year Abroad pathway spend their third year studying at one of UCL’s partner universities overseas. This year replaces the standard UCL Year 3 and allows students to immerse themselves in a different academic and cultural environment, exploring architecture and related disciplines from an international perspective. The modules taken abroad vary by institution but are designed to complement the programme’s interdisciplinary focus, offering opportunities to engage with global approaches to architectural research, design, and urban studies.
Year 4
In the final year, students complete 120 credits, including at least 60 from The Bartlett. They must take either Architectural Research III or Design and Creative Practice 3, though most choose both to develop substantial independent research and advanced design work. The remaining credits are electives, with popular choices including archaeology, economics, history of art, and management. The year emphasizes independence, originality, and integration of architectural and interdisciplinary perspectives, preparing students for postgraduate study or varied career paths.
Flexible Learning
Unlike conventional architecture degrees with a fixed curriculum, AIS allows students to customise their studies.
Students can select from a wide range of modules at UCL, including anthropology, archaeology, art history, economics, planning, education, geography, management, and politics, alongside modules at The Bartlett.
Dedicated modules are also offered in architectural research, design and creative practice, and sustainable city infrastructures, taught by leading interdisciplinary designers, artists, urban researchers, and policy makers.
Learning Approach
Emphasis on project- and activity-based learning, combining material and conceptual experimentation with rigour.
Constant production of small assignments that gradually build into a larger portfolio.
Focus on collaboration, with group work, study visits, and field trips linking theory to real-world contexts.
Regular group and peer reviews to develop critical thinking, communication, and evaluative skills.
Global Experience
AIS is the only undergraduate programme at The Bartlett School of Architecture that includes a full year immersed in another university (third-year equivalent). Students can choose from global destinations such as Montreal, Melbourne, Tokyo, Umeå, Hong Kong, and Vienna.
Careers and Opportunities
The flexible nature of AIS opens pathways to a wide variety of careers and postgraduate study options at leading design and research institutions worldwide. Graduates may pursue careers in:
Architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning.
Set design, video game design, filmmaking, and artistic research.
Real estate, property development, urban regeneration, and sustainability.
Architectural history, curating, community engagement, and local government.
Fields beyond the built environment, such as human rights, public health, and public administration.
