Curriculum Structure
Years 1–2
In the early years, you’ll build a solid foundation in mathematics, mechanics, materials, and structural analysis, alongside modules like Space, Form and Structure where you begin to explore architecture in a design-studio setting. You’ll also cover Engineering Materials, structural mechanics, and core mathematics, while participating in tutorials, lab experiments, and project work that help you tie together engineering theory with architectural spatial thinking.
Years 3–4
As you progress, the course brings more architectural theory and real-world civil engineering understanding together. You’ll take modules such as Between Thinking and Making – Historic Architecture in Context and Contemporary Architecture, balancing historical architectural study with modern technical design. On the civil side, you’ll learn Surveying, Geomechanics, Structural Analysis & Design, and Soil Mechanics, which are all critical to understanding the behavior of structures in real-world and ground-interaction contexts.
Years 5 (Final Year)
In your final year you’ll work on a Conceptual Design Project in a studio environment, designing a building from the ground up with both engineers and architects in mind. There’s also a substantial Individual Research Project where you investigate a specialist technical or design topic. Core engineering modules include Structural Design, Geotechnical Design, and Construction Management, while advanced topics cover Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Finite Element Modelling, Life Cycle Analysis & Environmental Impact Assessment, and Use of Sustainable Materials in Construction.

If you join this MEng degree, you're entering a programme that blends structural engineering rigor with architectural creativity. You’ll tackle design projects in context—working on architectural form, structural behaviour, and sustainability all in tandem. There are site visits and a residential geology/surveying camp to help you connect theory with real environment. Over time, your design modules grow more complex, emphasizing parametric modelling, Building Information Modelling (BIM), and computational architecture. In the later years, you engage in multidisciplinary design projects alongside both engineers and architects.
