BA(Hons) Architecture and Planning (with Foundation Year)

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of the West of England

Program Overview

The BA(Hons) Architecture and Planning (with Foundation Year) is a dynamic, interdisciplinary five-year program that integrates the fields of architecture and planning. This unique course meets the validation requirements of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for Part 1 qualification, a crucial step toward becoming a registered architect in the UK, and fulfills the academic requirements for membership with the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), equipping graduates to advance in both professions.

The program aligns with RIBA’s six key Themes and Values—Health and Life Safety, Ethics, Sustainability, Design, Contextual Studies, and Communication—and the RTPI’s focus on sustainable development, social equity, and effective planning systems. It provides a robust foundation in spatial planning, architectural design, and the legal, cultural, and technological aspects of both disciplines.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year (Year 1):
The foundation year focuses on equipping students with essential academic skills and subject knowledge to progress through the subsequent levels of the program. It emphasizes the acquisition of appropriate academic skills and relevant subject knowledge to allow students to develop and progress through levels 1, 2, and 3 in relation to knowledge and understanding, cognitive, subject-specific, and study skills.

Year 2:
The second year delves deeper into architectural design and planning principles, focusing on sustainable communities and the history of architecture. Modules include 'Design Studio 1', 'Healthy and Responsible Architecture', 'Healthy Sustainable Communities', and 'History of Architecture'.

Year 3:
In the third year, students engage in advanced design projects and planning studies, including 'Design Representation', 'Future Places', 'Research and Design Strategies', and 'Studio 2'. This year emphasizes the integration of architectural and planning concepts in real-world scenarios.

Year 4:
The fourth year focuses on collaborative practice and advanced design studios, with modules such as 'Collaborative Practice', 'Design Studio 3', 'Dissertation', and 'Planning Global Cities'. Students work on complex projects that require interdisciplinary collaboration and research.

Year 5:
In the final year, students undertake a major design project in 'Design Studio 4', an integrated practice studio, and explore advanced architectural theories. Modules include 'Agency Project A', 'Design Studio 4', 'Integrated Practice Studio', and 'Theories of Architecture and Design'.
