BA (Hons) Photography

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Central Lancashire

Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Photography at the University of Central Lancashire offers you a hands-on, studio-driven experience where you’ll develop into a multi-skilled photography practitioner with both creative vision and technical proficiency. It’s ideal if you’re passionate about visual storytelling, want to explore how images shape society, and are looking to build a strong portfolio while preparing for a creative career.

Curriculum structure:

Year 1:

In your first year you’ll build the foundations—learning camera techniques, darkroom and digital workflows, and beginning to think critically about photographic practice and visual culture. You’ll take units such as Introduction to Photography, Darkroom and Digital Imaging, and Visual Culture & Photography (these are indicative based on the published course modules). You’ll work through live briefs and start producing your own visual responses under guided supervision.

Year 2:

In the second year you deepen your skills and begin specialising, with opportunities to study abroad or join sponsored international trips. You might engage with units like Advanced Photographic Practice, Professional Practice in Photography, and Alternative Processes & Bookmaking. You’ll explore working with clients or live briefs, and push your creative ideas while refining your technical execution—print, scanning, darkroom, studio, exhibition.

Year 3:

In your final year you’ll lead your own major project, integrating your learning and preparing for professional practice or further study. You’ll undertake units such as Major Photographic Project, Curating & Exhibiting Photography, and Professional Portfolio & Business Practice. You’ll refine your personal voice, prepare a strong body of work for exhibition/publication, and explore how your practice connects to the wider creative industries.

Focus areas: Visual storytelling, technical studio practice (darkroom & digital), client-led and live-brief work, exhibition/publication project.
Learning outcomes: By the end of the course you will be able to produce professionally-relevant photographic work, demonstrate critical awareness of how images function in society, apply industry-standard technical workflows (studio, digital, print, bookmaking), and present a coherent portfolio and publication/exhibition as a launch platform for your career.
Professional alignment (accreditation): While this is an undergraduate degree with no specific external professional accreditation listed, the course is clearly designed with vocational alignment in mind—students work on live briefs, use industry-standard studios, and build industry-relevant portfolios.
Reputation (employability rankings): The University of Central Lancashire’s Photography programme was ranked 1st in the North West for career prospects in the Guardian University Guide (Film Production & Photography) category.
