The BA Film and Television at the University of Reading is an exciting mix of theory, history, criticism, and hands-on screen practice. It’s designed for students who love storytelling through moving images—whether your passion is directing, editing, producing, or analysing—and who enjoy combining creative work with critical thinking.
Curriculum structure
Year One
In your first year, you’ll lay a solid foundation in both film and television theory as well as introductory production. Modules such as Introduction to Filmmaking, Analysing Theatre and Performance, and Introduction to Scriptwriting will guide you through the basics. You’ll start to learn the language of film—covering editing, cinematography, and sound—while experimenting practically in studio spaces.
Year Two
The second year allows you to dig deeper into your interests with optional modules like Authorship and Genre, Industry Practices, and Creative Screen Practice. You’ll work on more group-based projects, perhaps in television or short film, while sharpening your technical skills—camera work, lighting, and sound design—all within broader cultural and media contexts.
Year Three
In your final year, you’ll combine your creative and analytical skills in a capstone production or a creative research project. You can also choose to complete a dissertation. The Commercial and Community Filmmaking module gives you a chance to produce real-world media for clients and collaborate with local organisations. Optional modules let you explore further in film and television theory, production, or hybrid forms.
