Business Psychology BSc (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Birkbeck University of London

Program Overview

This BSc in Business Psychology gives you a strong mix of psychology and business: you’ll learn how people behave in work settings, what motivates them, how they differ, and how organisations can bring out the best in employees. It’s ideal if you’re interested in roles that lie between business strategy / HR / organisational development and human behaviour—if you like both numbers, data, and people.

Curriculum Structure

Here’s how the learning progresses throughout the years, with some of the module names to show what you’ll actually study:

Year 1

In your first year you begin by building foundations: modules like Business Information Systems, Introduction to Accounting, Management Studies I & II, Personal and Academic Skills for Success, Quantitative Methods, and Principles of Marketing (depending on full- vs part-time structure) are core. You’ll learn basic business operations, analytical tools, and academic skills to prepare for rigorous study ahead.

Year 2

Second year dives deeper into psychology and organisational behaviour: you take modules such as Introduction to Organizational Psychology, Organizational Behavior, Organizational Change, Principles of Marketing, Research Methods in Management, Microeconomics for Business. These give you the tools to understand how work environments function, how change is managed, and how people behave in groups, plus how to design and carry out research.

Year 3 (Full-Time) / Year 3-4 (Part-Time)

In later years, you move toward advanced, specialised topics: Advanced Research Methods, Careers and Counselling at Work, Individual Differences and Psychometrics, Motivation, Engagement and Job Design, Occupational Health, Critical Perspectives on People Management. You’ll also do a significant research project. These modules let you apply what you've learned to real workplace psychology problems, develop analytical and evaluation skills, and get experience doing independent research.

Focus Areas

“Human behaviour at work; organisational change & well-being; individual differences & psychometrics; research & analytics; business fundamentals”

“Ability to apply psychological theories to work and organisations; advanced research & quantitative skills; understanding of individual & group behaviour; ability to design & manage change; strong business awareness (accounts, marketing, economics)”

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

  • The programme is accredited by the Association for Business Psychology.
  • It has Stage One Recognition by that Association, meaning the degree maps successfully to the criteria set for business psychology practitioners.
  • Note: this degree does not lead to Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society (BPS). If that’s important for certain psychology-career tracks, it’s a detail to be aware of.

Reputation (Employability / Rankings)

  • The department is one of the oldest in Europe in organisational psychology, which brings tradition, experience, strong research output, and academic credibility.
  • Graduates gain transferable skills—communication, research, data analysis, critical thinking—which are valued in business, HR, consultancy, change management, and similar roles.
  • Though I didn’t find a specific ranking for “Business Psychology BSc at Birkbeck” in major league tables like QS or The Guardian in the sources I checked, the accreditation and department reputation suggest it’s well regarded in its field.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll be learning in ways that go beyond lectures—you’ll work on real data, collaborate in groups, apply business psychology in live contexts, and use modern resources and support systems. The programme is designed so that you don’t just study theories, but actually practise what you learn.

Here are specific details about how you’ll get practical experience, what facilities and tools are available, and how you’ll build skills:

  • You’ll engage in seminars and workshops where you and your peers discuss case studies, test ideas, and apply psychological theories in business/organisational settings.
  • There is a final-year research dissertation / project where you design or conduct your own empirical work—collecting and analysing organisational data. This gives you real practice in research design, statistics, and critical thinking.
  • You’ll have modules like Research Methods / Advanced Research Methods which use quantitative and qualitative tools. That means statistics, psychometrics, collecting and interpreting data—all practically applied.
  • There is a Placement route option: students who take the placement version of the course get a year in a workplace environment to apply skills in a professional context.
  • The teaching staff are active researchers. So, you’ll be learning from people doing up-to-date work in organisational psychology, which helps tie theoretical learning to current professional practice.
  • You’ll use digital tools and online learning platforms: e.g. Moodle is used for virtual learning environment, module material, online readings, etc.
  • Smaller group work and peer discussion are frequent: you’ll not just hear lectures, you’ll actively participate in groups, discussions, tutorials.

Facilities & Resources at Birkbeck that Support Experiential Learning

To enable this kind of learning, Birkbeck offers you a strong set of facilities and services:

  • Clore Management Centre: this is Birkbeck's dedicated teaching & research centre for the Business School. You’ll have lectures, seminars, group work here.
  • Main Building on Malet Street: seminar rooms, study spaces, library facilities, café, etc. Good places for group discussion, independent study.
  • Library access: you have access to both Birkbeck library and, because Birkbeck is part of the University of London, the Senate House library.
  • IT and digital learning support: computers, online learning environment (Moodle), support for statistical software (for research methods modules) etc.
  • Career support: there’s a Careers and Enterprise service to help translate your skills into real career options, internships, placements, networking.

  • Human Resources Officer / Talent Management
  • Business or Organisational Psychologist (entry-level roles)
  • Recruitment Coordinator or Consultant
  • Management Consultant or Change Management Specialist

You’ll leave with skills in research, data analysis, understanding organisational behaviour, and applying psychology in business settings.

    • Awarding body is the University of London, via Birkbeck’s Department of Organisational Psychology — a well-established department.
  • Learning & Experiential Opportunities
    • There is a placement route: you can opt for a work placement year which can significantly boost your employability.

  • Long-Term Value
    • Because the programme is linked with recognised professional bodies, the skillset you gain remains in demand (ability to assess people, design motivation/engagement programs, manage change, etc.).
    • Also, the ability to move into postgraduate work or specialised fields is preserved (see below).

Further Academic Progression:

Once you finish your BSc in Business Psychology, here are the paths you might take if you want to go further:

  • Pursue a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology, Industrial/Work Psychology, Human Resource Management, or related fields. This can deepen your technical expertise, unlock higher-level roles (e.g. Chartered Psychologist, people specialist, consultant).
  • If you aim for chartered paths (in the UK or elsewhere), check whether the advanced programme offers or contributes to requirements for British Psychological Society (BPS) chartered status or equivalent professional recognition.
  • You could also consider research degrees (MPhil / PhD) if you are interested in academic or heavy-research roles (in universities, think-tanks, consultancy requiring psychological research).
