BA (Honours) Business and Financial Management with Foundation Year

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Sheffield Hallam University

Program Overview

Sheffield Hallam University also offers a BA (Honours) in Business and Financial Management with Foundation Year, a four-year course for students who need some additional preparation to progress on to degree-level study. The foundation year is designed particularly to develop critical academic and business-related skills in an effort to give students every chance to learn the fundamental business and financial studies presented later in the course. Once you move on into the main degree, you'll cover subjects such as corporate finance, business strategy, financial planning, and organisational leadership. Where this course differs is in the balance between theory and practice so that you not only know your subject but have also gained relevant experience that employers genuinely value.

Curriculum Structure:

The course is thoughtfully structured to support students from diverse academic backgrounds. It begins with a foundation year that reinforces your confidence and academic capabilities through modules in:

  • business environment

  • data handling

  • academic writing

  • finance fundamentals

From the second year onwards, you’ll delve into more advanced topics, including:

  • Strategic financial management and budgeting

  • Corporate governance and business ethics

  • Risk analysis, operations management, and business innovation

  • Investment decision-making, reporting, and financial markets

The third year is made up of a large applied project or dissertation, where you are encouraged to specialize in a field of interest and apply what you have learned in a real employer-led scenario.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Sheffield Hallam is especially renowned for its strong applied learning ethos. Throughout your time here, from the outset, you will be pushed to tackle real business problems and case studies that mirror industry scenarios.

  • In live client briefs and project work, you'll get to present proposals to tackle actual business issues.

  • A one-year work placement is optional between years two and three, where students work within businesses in the UK or abroad—meaning they can graduate with significant professional experience.

  • The course provides access to the Bloomberg Trading Suite, where you can practice financial decision-making in a real yet secure environment.

  • You'll also benefit from guest lectures, workshops led by industry leaders, and exposure to business incubators such as the Hallam i-Lab, which supports students wishing to start their own businesses.

This hands-on learning isn't an add-on—it's built into the program's DNA.

Progression & Future Opportunities

One of the best things about this course is the manner in which it prepares you for your next step—whether that be into employment or onto further education.

  • Sheffield Hallam's Careers and Employability Service offers one-to-one career guidance through CV guidance, mock interviews, and employer networking events.

  • Alumni go on to work within a range of different sectors, including financial services and consultancy, supply chain management, and leadership roles. A number have joined leading employers like LinkedIn, GlaxoSmithKline, Aston Martin, the NHS, and Tesco.

  • If you’re interested in postgraduate study, the degree provides a strong foundation for masters programs in business, finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship, or even professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA, or CFA.
