4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This program is delivered as part of the University of Liverpool’s 2+2 partnership with Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). Students complete the first two years of study in China before transferring to Liverpool for the final two years. The degree focuses on bioinformatics, integrating biological sciences with computational methods, data analysis, and informatics to understand complex biological data. It prepares graduates for careers in research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare industries where computational biology is increasingly important.
Curriculum Structure
Years 1 and 2 (XJTLU)
Students begin with core modules in biology, genetics, chemistry, and computing. Foundational training in programming, data handling, and statistical methods is introduced, alongside laboratory work in molecular and cellular biology.
Year 3 (Liverpool)
The focus shifts to advanced bioinformatics and computational biology. Students study modules such as genomics, systems biology, and data science for biological applications. Practical work involves applying computational methods to real-world biological datasets.
Year 4 (Liverpool)
In the final year, students undertake a major independent research project in bioinformatics or computational biology. The project strengthens skills in scientific computing, data analysis, and research communication. Optional modules may include structural bioinformatics, computational genomics, and applied biotechnology.
Focus Areas
The program integrates biological sciences, computer science, and data analytics, with a strong focus on genomics, systems biology, and computational methods applied to biological research.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates gain expertise in both biology and computer science, with strong computational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. They are trained to manage and interpret large-scale biological data and to apply bioinformatics tools in research and industry.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
The degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, ensuring professional recognition and alignment with industry and research standards.
Reputation (Employability & Graduate Outcomes)
The University of Liverpool is well-regarded for its research in life sciences and computational biology. Graduates of this program are highly employable in bioinformatics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, data science, and healthcare, and are also well-prepared for postgraduate study in bioinformatics or related fields.
The Bioinformatics BSc (Hons) 2+2 programme with the University of Liverpool allows students to spend the first two years at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in China and the final two years at the University of Liverpool, UK. The course combines biological sciences, computer science, and mathematics to analyse complex biological data. Students learn how to apply computational methods to study genomics, proteomics, systems biology, and biomedical data, preparing them for careers in bioinformatics, biotechnology, research, or further postgraduate study.
