Cardiff UniversityThis five-year version of our advanced flagship degree provides the option to complete an adventure-packed third year studying at one of our partner institutions in destinations around the globe.
The exciting and dynamic world of computer science is at the heart of many aspects of modern life, and the MSci Computer Science will give you both the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to become a part of that world. This four-year course will give you a true breadth of experience in Computer Science, providing extensive coverage of the subject beyond a traditional three year BSc.
On this course you will develop transferable technical, analytical and professional skills, supported by a broad awareness of current technology trends. The course covers a mixture of core techniques and concepts, advanced programming languages and paradigms, and evolving, technology-based subject matter. You will gain exposure to topics that are driving key technological developments and trends in Computer Science.
During the final two years of the course you will choose to study a selection of optional, research-led modules that will provide you with exposure to a wide set of skills and knowledge across the breadth of Computer Science research in the school. These modules include a number structured around advanced topics in the School's three core research areas:
Year Abroad: In the third year, students study at a partner university abroad, taking courses that complement and enhance their studies at Cardiff. This exposure to different teaching methods and curricula enriches their understanding of computer science and fosters adaptability.
Projects: Throughout the program, students engage in individual and group projects. In the first year, short projects introduce core concepts. The second year features a substantial team project where students design and implement a software system. The final year culminates in an advanced team project, developing new research and technology under academic supervision.
Research: In the fourth and fifth years, students undertake advanced, research-led modules aligned with Cardiff University's core research areas: Complex Systems, Visual Computing, and Data and Knowledge Engineering. These modules provide exposure to cutting-edge topics and methodologies in computer science.
Graduates of this BCS-accredited program are well-prepared for a variety of career paths in the technology sector, including roles such as software developer, systems analyst, IT consultant, and cybersecurity specialist. The international experience gained during the year abroad enhances employability by demonstrating adaptability and a global outlook to potential employers.
