BEng Computer Science (Software Engineering) with an Industrial Placement Year

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

You'll learn state-of-the-art software design and programming technologies, and also practise your skills in project management, teamwork and working with customers - skills expected by employers. You'll get a solid grounding in the fundamentals of computer science and the opportunity to explore aspects of artificial intelligence.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Focus on practical application: We emphasise the importance of practical skills development, allowing you to gain hands-on experience in designing, building, and testing software systems. This includes opportunities for real-world projects, such as our Software Hut module in Year 2, where students get to experience working with a client to deliver a software prototype. With these experiences, you will be immersed in the processes of engineering a real software system for a real client in a competitive environment.

Specialist teaching and facilities: Our lecturers are renowned computer scientists and internationally recognised researchers whose research shapes our cutting-edge teaching. You will have access to the latest software and equipment, including high-spec computers with graphics processing units, as well as a robotics arena in our dedicated labs.

Professional skills and group work: Professional, communication and presentation skills help to create more employable computer scientists and software engineers. These are extremely valuable to companies, making you a well-rounded and highly prized candidate.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Industrial placement year: You have the option to either study abroad for a year or spend a year working in industry, gaining real-world experience and building a robust network. Be inspired by top companies who join us on campus for employability fairs and networking sessions, plus our very own students who have done placements with industry leaders including Deloitte, The Walt Disney Company, PayPal, and Samsung SDS Europe.

Graduates of this program are well-prepared for diverse roles in the technology sector, including positions such as software engineer, systems analyst, and IT consultant. The industrial placement year significantly enhances employability by providing practical experience and industry connections. The University of Sheffield's Department of Computer Science is recognized for its strong industry links, offering students exposure to leading technology companies. Additionally, the program is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), fully meeting the requirements for Chartered Information Technology Professional (CITP) status and partially meeting the requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
